bean, do you ACTUALLY clean your dat every 20 hrs? i know i should, but i really don't, probably every 40-50, or when i remember.

I run a Sony dry tape through mine every three months. I use my D8 a ton and the three month method is working fine so far after 2+ years.
I probably run the dry tape through both the R300 and D100 a few times a year...luckily have not had a problem yet.

I would really shy away from running the dry tape through a Sony portable heads every 20 hours or whatever they recommend because it has the effect of wearing out the heads. I personally would not run the dry tape every 20 hours.

+T to all who responded, also how long do you run each tape for? (15-20seconds right?)
10 seconds...and I agree with Jamie...avoid the cleaning tape
you can overclean....run it for 10 seconds.
paul at prodig told me that every 30hrs was overkill, should do it every 50hrs.

it depends when i really remember or so......maybe more like 10-15 3+ hr showz.....but really whenever ya think it needs it......i agree w/ jamie lykos tho, the heads are not full sized on the small portables, but ive had no problems after 6 yrs w/ the ole d-8.... 8) :o
thanks for the advice fellas ;)
thought of a few more questions....is there anything wrong with using a dds tape for cleaning? I know that they are fine to record with but just want to make sure. Also, should you devote 1 cleaning tape to 1 dat player and not use it for any other ones? (sorry couldnt really think of another way to put it, but basically if I use a cleaning tape in my portable should it strictly be used for that or can I use it in my home unit after I cleaned my M1) my understanding is that you shouldnt do this but thought I get some opinions. ::)

You're not supposed to rewind the tapes, so every cleaning is with a virgin tape. Tramsferring between decks shouldn't matter.
The drive structure is the same as for dat, so I wouldn't think there would be a problem. If I'm wrong, I would love to be corrected in my thinking....anyone?
I know your not suppose to rewind but I have a 5mm tape that you play for 10 seconds and can continue from the part I left off for 60? uses or so.
i got a sony cleaning tape. i play it every 50hrs in my d8 for 10-12 secs. when i run out of space, i will buy another.
