Ok,
I recorded a show the other night using my Sony MZ-RH910 MD (hi-sp mode) and SP-CMC-19 mics.
Problem is the recording is quite quiet and I want to boost it and alsomake the mix better (maybe with some EQ or something).
I've been reading alot of stuff about 'Normalizing' and different forms of amplifying and about certain things affecting the dynamic range and lowering the quality of the recording.
To be honest, I'm lost in all this and now I don't know what to do to make my recording the best it can possibly be without ruining anything.
I did make a topic in the 'Ask The Tapers' section and had some advice, but reading this stuff has just confused me as I'm not too good with all this technical talk.
I'll post a sample of my recording (non-edited) in about 10 mins so you can see what might need doing and I can post some waveform pics if needed.
I'm using CoolEdit Pro and don't know how to Normailze without losing dynamic range, unless I'm not seeing it.
Any help will be really really appreciated.
Simon.

Ok, here's sample 1:
http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=3052C6C420EAC1A6 (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=3052C6C420EAC1A6)
This song has both quietier parts and louder parts and has some pyro 'explosions' that are really loud.
Waveform is attached (think i did it right)

Here's sample 2:

This is a song that is mostly loud (well basically the average volume for the recording).
Waveform attached...

I've not listened to the sample, but have experienced explosions before. Were you close enough to feel the heat?
What I do is to zoom in to each explosion, highlight the loud part, and cut the volume by, say between 8 and -10dB (experiment so its as loud, or just above the level of the rest of the recording). You'll then be able to normalise the gig to a sensible level.
Humbug

Not to be rude but there aint nothing gonna help ya with that one. Your about 15 dB to low overall. The explosions are low but there about where the rest of the recording should be.

I know that. I'm wondering how to get good EQ as I'm not too god at that and my speakers ain't the best. I can boost the recording ok.

I would compress the explosions a bit to make them peak out at a reasonable level with respect to the music peaks, then normalize the whole file.
