Bored on a Friday at work... I'll probably post a lot today.
Anyway... Roger Waters is coming to the venue formerly known as Great Woods this September and I can't wait. The last time he played there in '99 he set up a 360 degree sound system in the pavillion so that when they played various recordings over the PA (such as the helicopter intro to The Happiest Days of our Lives) he could make it seem like the helicopter was flying over the crowd by changing the direction the sound was coming from. I was in the very last row of the pavillion that tour and the speakers were directly behind me. It was a very cool effect, although a bit loud given I was right on top of them. This year I'm assuming he'll be rocking a similar setup and I'll be under the pavillion again.
I just arranged to purchase a single DPA 4060. I also have a pair of CSBs. From a straight sound quality standpoint, I believe the single DPA will smoke the CSBs, however, given the nature of Water's PA, I imagine the CSBs would do a better job of capturing the quadrophonic effect/stereo imaging of the show when running using my head as a J-disc.
I'm going to run the DPA anyway, as it's a new toy for me and I'm more concerned with capturing a good-sounding tape, but what would you run in this situation?

and are you going the 8th or 9th?
I"ve got lawn seats on the 8th, and i'll be running 4061s>Batterybox>R-09 in a HRTF setup.

I have seats dead nuts center in the middle of the surround... Think it will be perfect for the DSMs. :-}

I wanted good seats, but was not willing to pay the $150 a good taping seat would command.
last time I taped RW, in 2000...I paid $35 to be FOB/DFC.
fuck $150.

Do hrtf with the csb set and then if you can get another recorder do the single 4060 pointing straight up from your head.
If you did a 5.1 mix you could use the 4060 for the rears {although there would be no L/R} or for stereo mix keep it straight up with your csb set panned hard L - R.
Of course I think the mono mic recording a quad show is swell as well.
And I've about convinced myself to try and score a good Waters seat. My ticket karma has been good lately and there is still plenty of time.

If the 360 sound is only used for occasional effects, then I really wouldn't do anything out of the ordinary here. I don't see a point in running an extra channel/recorder just to capture these little gimmicks, especially since this will be stealth. But then again I have no clue about what Waters is doing in the first place, so take this with a grain of salt...

I think the best bet would be to go balls-out and run two stereo pairs. The forward set (cards) should be x/y (mono-compatibility for the l,r,c in the 5.1 mix) and ORTF cards facing back. Two pairs would take up a bit of room in a hat but it might be possible. Hmmm, I wonder if DINa cards were used in the front maybe a true quad mix could be done (no center channel, no need for x/y)....
Def. a team effort, but doable, I think...
But I don't know nuttin' ;D

I also thought of running both the CSBs and the 4060... just might do that and mix it down later. Part of me wants to opt for the simplicity, though. Fortunately, I've got more time to think about it... or maybe score another 4060 on ebay. >:D

do it. Grab another 4060 and run two pairs and use Vegas to make a quad mix. It will be sweet!
