Very interested to know what people prefer when recording FOB at an outdoor show/festival.

Split omnis, 4', no rolloff. The split will often depend on the mics used and on your position, but there is no other configuration for me.

I voted Blumlein. Why do you think I ran Blumlein at RockyGrass for every set this year? ;D Though David and Keith's split MK2 omnis sound mighty fine, too.

I voted split omni. But I'm wondering about distance from the stacks. When does the distance become to great for any type of omni or subcard recording?
Thinking about split omnis at GOTV. The section is usually on the right side of the board. Not a great distance from the stage, but not FOB either.

Were you at the Vibes last year? I ran split omni's (approx 5' split - 40' of from stage lip) with Ed for MMW/Scofield - yes in the rain. Even though I have committed to stay in the section most of the time this year - I plan to run a few FOB's.

j-disk sounds great outdoors, just don't know what effect that would have with the wind/phasing

Not sure, but I would think phasing be less of an issue FOB? Also out of all mic's omni's are the least susceptible to wind. I ran stage lip at Langerado this year and there was a healthy wind. The recordings turned out sweet IMO. I had planned to run Blumlein but the wind conditions made me change my mind. I don't currently have a good wind screen (i.e., basket type) for my blumlein set-up.

i just don't know how the baffle would affect the phasing, if at all. my buddy ran j-disk ADK SC-T omnis for wakarusa, so I should know this, but I havent listened to entire tapes of his yet to hear if/how much phasing is an issue, but the soundstage on them was fantastic

I'll be running split omni's back at the board for the main stage 90% of the time. I usually set up just fob and spread a bit less than as wide as the sbd area is.

Can M/S and Blumlein be mixed with a SBD, or does that create any weird phasing/sound staging? Seems like Blumlein rocks, but often suffers when in a chatty crowd. I've been wondering about taming it down a bit with a SBD matrix.

Not sure if I was clear enough when refering to FOB. When I say FOB I really mean:
- Up close
- In the sweet spot 8)
- Stacks and mic position forming a +/- equilateral triangle
- Down in the crow ;D
- NOT just in front of the board / section
How do others define this position?

Pretty much like that.
My question was how far is too far? Is at the SBD too far away to run omnis? And being at that spot, how big of a spread relative to the PA, assuming most outdoor SBD's are what, 75-100 feet from stage?
Just curious. The jdisc would eliminate having to guess at the distance of the spread ;)

Isn't the idea of a j-disc baffle to 'nullify' any instance of phasing while still maintaining the 'split'? Compared to split, when on a disc, they're damn near coincident.

Now that answered my question. The left side always seems lighter on peeps. I'll be there Saturday only, running splits on the left. I think everyone is on the right for recharge of batts and possible SBD plug in's.

I usually wear a light weight mesh hat and currently run cards. If possible, I clamp the mics on my stand. In the past I did run my schoeps ccm41's (hypers) and made some sick tapes.
