Alright, I want to throw this box into my modest little rig here pretty soon. While I save up a little scratch, I'd like to know what I need to run this box.
Here's what I think I need, correct me if I'm wrong.
From my 3-wire box:
Stereo mini female>dual RCA cable (already own for some home recording shit)
RCA female >coax male adapter cable (something like this? (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2414205&cp=&origkw=y+cable+rca&kw=y+cable+rca&parentPage=search)
From the Hosa to the iRiver:
Toslink>mini toslink cable (here (http://www.mcminone.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=MCMProducts&product%5Fid=24%2D6475))
And finally some sort of 9V portable battery something. I have a hard time understanding all the threads about hacking the AC adapter, so I'm pretty much totally in the dark about this.
On base or way off?

You wont need the Hosa for anything until you have a A/D converter...
Looks like you are going batt box>iriver for now...

yeah, the hosa 276 is for converting a coaxial digital signal to an optical digital signal, and vice-versa. it's not an a/d, if that's what you;re thinking.

Nah...not totally...you can still the hosa to accept a digital patch for the iriver...

you didn't blow anything. you really don't necessarily need an adc, especially if you're stealthing (which I assume you are based on your low-pro rig). An external ADC is just another box, another battery, and another set of cables to deal with.

The rig is more about low funds than low pro, although that option is a nice one. I wanted an A/D to throw in during open taping. Oh well. I find something, AD-20 maybe, or whatever else might work.

How about a Sony SBM 1? That would be a good A/D and be pretty stealthy.

I really like that idea and these seem to be going for a reasonable price right now too. Thank you for that suggestion, +T.

I used the hosa box for patching for a while till I could afford a UA-5. It's a great little box for patching, and the 9v hocky puck style batteries power that thing forever. When you upgrade later you can offer digital out's with the hosa if you so choose.
