Title: DPA 4060/61’s vs. Shoeps MK2H/MK2S/MK3
Post by: noam on August 25, 2006, 11:05:37 AM
I am considering getting the Shoeps MK2S capsules to use with their KCY active cables>Sonosax, for situations that require omnis (for cardioids I use the MK4’s.) The DPA 4060/61’s have the advantage of smaller size (for stealthing). Even the Schoeps catalogue says:” A pressure transducer with ideal response in all situations does not exist. A very small capsule could allow the high-frequency response to be flat regardless of direct- or diffuse-field placement, but such small capsules are quite noisy.” But the DPA’s are not noisy (and have a high-frequency emphasis.) Anyone compared the DPA’s to any of the Shoeps with the high-frequency emphasis (MK2H/S/MK3)?

Yes, I compared them. I really like the 2S. The 2S are excellent mics for classical music. I've made some good and bad recordings with the 4060s but nearly all my 2S recordings sounded excellent. What omni mics do you have or you only have the Car MK4s?

For loud music, the small mics from DPA are fine, but for quiet material, I have found them to be way too noisy. they are good for spot mics, percussion, etc, but as a main pair..they didnt cut it for me(coupled with the fact that I am a clumsy jackass and was afraid I would break them). The schoeps MK2S are fantastic microphones..no denying that. They are standards in the professional classical recording realm. (check out Simon Eadons recordings of beethoven string quartets..those were grammy winning, made with only a pair of schoeps MK2S and a jecklin disc) I have several pairs of the CMC62S. while we are talking about DPA, I would also suggest looking at the DPA 4006. I just bought 3 of those for a decca tree configuration, and absolutely love them!

BUT>>>>>

the cream of the crop..the mother of all omnis, in my opinion is the Gefell MK221 with Josephson C617 bodies. ...they are measurement mics, and as such are ruler flat, and incredibly sensitive!

Thanks for your comments. That was the last push I needed to spend the money on the MK2S. I got them on Friday and will report once I get to use them. In the meantime, I also upgraded from HiMD to the SONY PCM D1. Maybe you can help me with that one too – I posted some questions about it on the Recording Gear board today.

The advice I have been getting on this forum has been extremely helpful and much more reliable than any I got from dealers (who all just try to push the equipment they are selling and trash what they’re not selling.)

This probably is too late, but did you consider selling the MK4's and getting the MK5's. This would give you two options in one capsule.  Not sure if there are any MK2S / MK5 comps/opinions
