Hello guys,
I think I am a bit confused here.
Initially I was under impression that built-in Edirol R-09's power was sufficient to drive CMC-8s. However, I am noticing that I can only get it to record if the recording level is set to two clicks from the zero-point (on an high sensitivity setting). Is this expected or something is wrong with my mics?
I just want to know this sure before I go ahead and spend another $50 for a battery box.
Spoke to Chris from Sound Professionals and he seems to be surprised as well.
Anybody else tried this combination of mics and the recorder?
Thanks a lot,
Vic

Question: are you saying you can only get the R-09 to show levels with those settings (gain setting #2, mic sensitivity => high)?
What type of sound are you trying to record? Nature sounds? Acoustic performance? Amplified performance? Something else?
As far as I know, the R-09's "plug-in power" is about 2.5V. You can record nature sounds and the like with that lower of a power supply, but it's not going to work very well with "rock concerts," for instance.

Hi,
If I stand still, I can boost levels quite high (mic high sensitivity), however, any spike in sound (such as body movement) overloads mics.
Sorry, if I am not explaining this well. I could perhaps slip in a quick recording to anyone who may be able to help.
Thanks,
Vic

have you tried going line in?

What type of sound are you trying to record?
It sounds to me like you are just testing out the recorder... but with "every day" sounds, like a car driving by or the birds singing. If this is the situation, the problem is that the sounds are not really loud enough to get a good recording. You would need a preamplifier, or you need to set the microphones in a stationary (not moving) position and start the recording, with the Mic Sensitivity set to HIGH (on the switch on the back of the R-09).
What capsules do you have with your AT853 microphones? Cardioid or hypercardioid or omnidirectional? If they are cardioid or hypercardioid, then they will make a "spike" with sudden movement.
Again, the plug-in power provided by the R-09 is not ideal for many situations. Are you planning on recording concerts? Or what?

Hi,
Tried to record various sounds, street noise, noise in the bar. Didn't try concerts yet as I can't even pass those basic tests.
Tried line-in as well but that didn't do it either.
My mics use omnidirectional capsules.
I am really starting to think that the cables are faulty because when I simply shake the cable, the shortage occurs.
Well, sending them back for repair to SP and see what happens.

I have a mini battery module from soundprofessionals that's collecting dust in my closet. It's very tiny and comes with a 6" mini plug connected into the box. It uses one 9V battery. Let me know if you're interested. I can send pics if necessary.
