Title: Edirol R-09 issues w/Transcend 4GB Card speciific to playback + rec over 2GB
Post by: Galen on September 13, 2006, 12:51:05 AM
Recently I took the plunge to purchase an Edirol R-09 after years with DATs, MD & cassette tapes. The Edirol R-09 is a nice little unit, it really is. I am very new to this type of taping so if I gleam over something obvious, my mistake.

The issue I have is not if I can record 4GB worth of material on it via the Transcend 4GB card, I can, but trying to understand the limitations of it at this point. The issue is that my unit, updated w/1.03, will not recognize files larger than the 2GB for unit-specific playback; meaning, I could not listen to it on my headphones after a show if I wanted, which is ok & not a big deal. That said, I can get the recordings, w/o issue, off of the SD card > computer going R-09>US 2.0. 3.68 GB took me 20+ minutes for a trasfer I know I could use a card reader but I'm not going to bother.

Now, if I record one file or cumulative files *over* 2GB I will get a "SD card is slow" error message. WTF? After a couple tries of not-erasing anything & creating several ghost files (i.e.: files that show up but do not have anything recorded on them), I sometimes can record further on it. This is approximately 6/10 times & is in reference to having over 2GB, the official support, over the limit on the 4GB Transcend card. I spent hours on this project & did, to the best of my ability, read through all previous threads concerning the R-09 & did not see this situation mentioned.

Has anyone else had these issues? How do I stop the issues? Should I reformat my card after every use if I go over 2GB's? Have other people had issues where they had a strange error message come up after they have a large file over 2GB? Anything else that may be corellative to this inquiry? I do appreciate all info.

Thanks.

Hopefully somebody corrects me if I'm wrong here, because I will doing a dry run with my R-09 Thursday night at a local show before the big gigs Friday and Saturday...

But I believe you'll want to create a new track before you exceed the 2 GB mark. The 4GB are not really supported after all. Or maybe it's a matter of, if you want to play them on the unit, they need to be less than 2 GB each.

This reminds me, I need to read the manual and see how to create new tracks :D

Sorry, wrong.  I have made many recorders over 2gb without a problem.

There is no tracking on the R-09

Did you try formatting the Sd card in your PC again?

I haven't seen the slow message myself and have done about 4 test runs over 2gb without a problem.

Basically, this, I got my R09 & the Transcend card in the mail. Opened them up. Then recorded for 4 hours approx @ 24/48 (not totally to 4 hours but enough that I could record more). The 'SD card slow' message popped up after that. I could transfer it fine but not able to listen to that big track on the R09. In fact, the R09 would skip over the track... meaning, it would try to access the track then it would just jump to the next track (track I tried to record) & get that message.

However I do not want to be in a position where I'm at a show & I get issues with recording. Any help is appreciated.

The Transcend card you need to format first in your PC before using it.  It worked similiarly for me sort of in the R09, but not 100%.
I formatted the 4gb in my PC, all issues gone.

Galen, did you format in the PC?

The "can't playback 2GB" files bug is consistent.. I've seen it.  It also reports the size incorrectly on the r09.  As long as you don't panic and start deleting/etc, that one is not a big deal for most.

I haven't seen the slow media message.. I'm pretty sure I've recorded just over 2gb and then started another file without issues.  For some shows you can just keep rolling to 4GB in one file..   But if you're seeing 4 bands in a night with setup time between each, that is not practical.. Based on the 'slow' reports, I've started being a little nervous and tended to just keep rolling through set breaks.

FWIW, I don't format my card after each use.. I just delete *vi the r09 menu*, not via the PC. Not sure if that is significant.

I guess we need some more testing to better understand when this bug occurs. Maybe two tests:

delete all
record 2.5GB
record 100MB
record 100MB
record 100MB

delete all
record 100MB
record 100MB
record 2.5GB

Hey,

Yes I formatted in my computer otherwise the Transcend would not be understood, at all, in the R-09. I simply put the SD card into my SD reader of my computer & format from there. That's easy.

I did buy a card reader as I did not know if I would need it - that simply goes into USB 2.0 but that will not work for me for some reason - go figure.

When I have the 4GB card in the R09, go to the menu & check out the information on it - it goes up to the 2GB mark (it appears). But when I record with it, the bar will go all the way to the 4 hour-ish mark. And the time will be accurate as well.

The thing that worries me with the 'slow' message is that it seems to be inconsistent. Meaning, I tried it several times in a row & it would not work (doing the same thing). Then, I tried it again & it worked fine. That is very troubling to me. I do not want to just get stuck at a show where I tape two opening acts then the damn thing will not record the main act, that would be bad.

Firmware v1.02 or 1.03?

v.103

Damn, I only got that message using the 102 fw. So I've just been lucky with 103.

I got the slow card error with the 4 GB non-SDHC Transcend card today. It has always worked well in the past. It didn't cause any problems, but then the one time I didn't get the error, my recording's speed was off (it was too fast, meaning the data was being recorded too slow). Anybody know what's going on? I'm going to try it again after I've had it shut down for a few hours, as I had left the unit turned on but not doing anything for a while (was recording instrumental tracks one-by-one in a studio-esque situation).

FYI all of my trascend 4gb cards have failed.  I now went with kingston SDHC 4 gb card no problem so far.

All my SANDISK 4GB-SDHC cards work flawlessly too with firmware 1.20 ;).

I've had no problem with my R09 - 4 gig cards are suported with the 1.20 firmware, I think, so anyone who hasn't updated yet may well find that helps.

i agree, by all means update your firmware!

4gb SDHC cards are supported by firmware 1.20.

the transcend 4gb non-SHDC card works, somewhat, but not without lots of bugs:  corrupt files, files with misreported sizes, et al.

if you own a non-SDHC 4gb card, you'd be better off cutting your losses and pitching the card.  buying an SDHC card will set you back a few more dollars, but it won't cause you any headaches down the road.

So far I've been unsuccessful at formatting my new card in the R-09 (version 1.20). It's a San Disk 4GB SDHC. I'm having no problems with the 2GB card but when I try to format the larger one I get the "formatting card" message for 10 minutes, then the unit powers down (I believe it's been set to power off after 10 minutes of inactivity). When I turn the power back on it shows no card. If I put the card in my digital camera I get a "card error" message.

 ???

I was planning to use it tonight, so I'll probably be picking up a card reader today to try formatting on the PC. Unless someone has a suggestion.

Wow...  I never had any trouble with my 4GB Transcend card... until I upgraded to 1.20.  I'm not certain whether my recent troubles were due to the heat of the v3+722 in the bag.. but the r09 just locked up mid-set.

Anyone tried to go back to the previous release (1.19?)?  Anyone have a copy?

I'm pretty sure I have the zip file for for the previous version (1.10) at home.  Shoot me a PM if you'd like me to email it to you this evening.

Later,

I think you can skip the card reader and just format on the PC with your R-09 connected via USB cable.  That's what I did prior to the "SDHC compatible" firmware and my Transcend 4gb card.

I just attempted to format the drive that way but I get a "no disc" message. I don't think this is a formatting issue, just a faulty piece of hardware. On the bright side I also got a low battery message (after putting a new set in yesterday), so at least I was prompted to replace them.

Thanks for the suggestion- it gives me one more reason to return the card.

First show I taped with my R09, I got about 5 minutes in and checked the level - it seemed to still be recording, hold button on and whatnot, but the danged thing froze for a second, why I have noooo idea. Got a little chunk of audio missing, thankfully only a second or less, but still odd. It might be that I jogged the R09, or it might have been the heat of it being stashed under a jacket wrapped in a scarf, I don't know.

No problems with the second show, or anything else I've recorded with it.

Just an FYI.

I have a Transcend 4gb SD card (NOT SDHC).  It works great.

HOWEVER, you need to format the card with a Windows PC as Fat32.

When I tried to do a format in the R-09 I had problems with the card.
