Title: iriver rockbox level meter
Post by: cusnuff on September 16, 2006, 03:19:06 PM
I thought someone here or on the rockbox forum had taken a photo that tracked out a rough peak meter for rockbox for the iriver series.

If anyone could piont me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.  I haven't had much luck with the search.

What is it you're after?  I'm not sure what "tracked out" means...

If its screenshots then there's some in the first post of the recording enhancements pack thread in the recording section of the rockbox forum. I'd give you a link but I can't get to the site atm.

...alternatively you could just take the screenshots yourself.

There's info on how to do it here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ScreenDump

...but basically you just enable screendump (Menu->Info->Debug (keep out) ->Screendump)...then insert the USB cable when you wanna take the screendump.  It saves the piccy to your root directory.

I'm looking for a rough -db guide to the peak meter.  I though someone had taken a screen shot and wrote out here is where -0db is, here is where -10db is, -15, and so on.   I botched a recording (overloading) and I want to know where I went wrong.

I saw it or I thought I saw it before I bought the iriver, so I didn't think too much about it at the time.  The rockbox forum appears to be down.  Hmm.

Like that for the recording screen.

What wps/theme is that screen?

i would absolutely love numbers on my recording meters... i have the min set to -12dB and max at 0dB.  it kinda helps because i can eye -6 and -3, but i would LOVE having the actually numbers there.

I do the same. It would be great to know how to put this theme with more detailed level meter?

I'd post the request to the REP thread @ rockbox.  I don’t really have much use for that function as I’ve used the unit enough to have a pretty good idea where levels are at. The gigs I see usually have a greater range than 12dB tho so I set my peakmeter range to -20dB > 0dB.

Thanks everyone.  I'll change the minimum range for my peak meter.  I think that will solve my problem with eye-balling the levels.

I realize I had my unit set on mic instead of line-in.  Trouble shot : (

most shows are a greater range for me as well, it was done just for simplicity's sake.  with 20 (or larger) the half way point on the meter is too far from the range i want to be in and the quarter still has too much wiggle room.
i want to see the meters dance in a zone that is HOT and that i know its HOT.

Same here.  I set my meter range at -12 & 0 and like to see the meters stay about midway (i.e. -6 db).

I also found this range useful when running a matrix on the fly with the UA-5.  I turned off the phantom power to my mics and adjusted the SBD feed until the meters were just registering on the H140 (around -12db).  Then I powered my mics and adjusted the mic gain until my meters were dancing about midway (-6db).  The result was great, with an approximate 40% SBD / 60% Audience Matrix.

HOW exactly do u set your range in the settings for just having -12dB to 0dB on the screen?
with the max. gain setting at the bottom in the AGC-parameters when u hit the bottom-down?
thx for your help!

No. It's in the general settings, not the recording settings. I think under LCD and then Peak Meters, or something like that...

thx! ;)
just set the minimum to -20dB and the max to 0dB in the peaksettings.
now the levels are really jumping up and down in this HOT range!
great stuff really!
i also set the max. gain to +20dB to avoid noise of the digital gain. petur said more than +20dB gain would cause lotsa digital noise.
thx!

it's not digital noise but the iriver (analog) pre-amp

analog gain is in 2 or 3dB steps depending on line-in or internal mic
rockbox fills the gaps between those steps with 0.5dB gain steps from the decimator.

and because the decimator works on the full ADC precision iso 16bits, this causes no quality issues.
