I've just got some R4 skips!!! WTF is going on? I noticed that the LCD display slowed down quite a lot, updating once every two seconds or so. I'm not sure if this is connected. The unit was sitting on a flat surface and the sound was not super loud.
Oh yeah, I just formatted the drive (on the unit's menus), after a big session, so it should be fresh now.
Recording 4ch, dual stereo, 44.1/24bits.
I have never seen a "hdd slow" message. Is there some way to turn on diagnostics?

I don't know of any R-4 diagnostics, on-board or otherwise. There's the old HD Check and Format, but no real diagnostics to speak of. Maybe a standard HD diagnostic utility would work over USB? 'Course, that won't help if the problem is the R-4 and not the HD.
Odd that you had the skips without the HDD Slow message. Try setting it to 24/96, 4 x mono, and see if that triggers the HDD Slow message. Not sure what that'll prove, though, other than you can at least trigger the message. :-\

I've never seen the display slow down on mine..... However, not to state the obvious, but with most electronics if something like that happens there is some kind of issue/conflict on the backend or something taking up the CPU time. Anyway you may want to hook the machine to the PC, back up what is on there, run a chkdsk /r on it and see if there are any issues with the drive. As a general note if you do find a probelm with the drive I've seen a noticable run time increase with a newer faster drive in mine.

Which drive have you got? Can you recommend a specific make/model#?
Thanks,

Here is the one I got.... Looks like it has gone down $5 in price since.
I was trying to decide between this and a segate and then saw this in the decription. Figured if the slow HDD was due to vibrations that this might help.
Industry-leading robustness in both non-op and operating shock Optimized femto actuator/suspension design RoHS compliant
Looks like some of the larger ones have come down in price since I upgraded mine... But I'm pretty happy with the 60gig. Should be plenty for festival use at 24/48 or 24/96.
