Title: Apogee MiniMe
Post by: Charlie Miller on October 17, 2006, 01:40:02 AM
Has anyone done a bit comparison with the different outputs on the Apogee MiniMe? I'm wondering if there is any difference between the USB out and the coax out.

You probably know this, but the USB does not support sampling rates of 96khz.  So there's at least one difference between the two.

I ran the USB for about a year and a half and then switched to the COAX (and shortly thereafter to the AES) because the USB on my Vaio was flaky... too much pressure put on the port by the cable caused the connection to wear and become less reliable.

I never did any bit accuracy tests between the two, but I did need to have different buffering settings using the USB vs. a VxPocket/Coax.  With the USB I had to increase buffering settings in WaveLab4 to prevent the occasional pops... with the VX the WaveLab4 defaults were adequate.

Not much help as far as your original question, but I thought I'd chime in here anyway with these subtle diffs.

USB just sucks for audio..plain and simple.
took me years to admit that.

I never had an issue recording 24/48 via USB and the minime.

Of course, I won't use windows for recording..

Once I had the OS tweaked (Win2k) and the buffer settings changed as mentioned above it was pretty flawless... that is until the loose-ness of the USB port came to bite me in the ass.

I've never had any issues with samplitude and USB. I have some of the GD SBD Cassette Masters and am using my minime for A>D conversion. It's easier for me to run it into my PC via USB since the coax and aes feeds run elsewhere (running dats for someone...rememebr those??). My PC has 2GB of memoery and due 3.2GB processors. This thing kicks ass....

Charlie, sounds like you have one, but let me know if you need to use a minime...extended period usage is fine. Hope all is well.

I've had one since fall 2002. It's actually Arielle's. She got it when she bought her Schoeps from cascademedia. I've decided to use the AES/EBU for the dat recorder and the Coax for the decktop PC.

Thanks for the offer.....hey how did your SKB FOB come out last fall in Falls Church??

Very enjoyable...a bit of chattiness from some folks that filled in in front of the rail (but no complaints from me). Thanks again. You didn't happen to make the Everyone Orch w/SK there earlier this month did you? Had to miss it myself.  :-\
