Here is a link http://www.neurosaudio.com/store/prod_USB2_80gbspec.asp (http://www.neurosaudio.com/store/prod_USB2_80gbspec.asp) ;)

If your going to spend that much money, I would get a microtrack 24/96, unless he is going to use it more as an mp3 player, then I would go with an IRiver.  The Microtrack stinks as a playback system IMO. Otherwise some basic pro's and con's for the neurosaudio unit.

Pro's:
Small
80gig HD
records in wav
Line-in rec
Long battery life
Open Source

Con's:
8bit wav recording ???
no digital input
8bit wav recording >:(
oh yeah, 8bit recording :'(

Id say this unit is more for voice recording

I'm surprised to still see the model still offered new on their site.  Must be going on 5 years now since first introduced with 20 GB drive.  A bit awkward when I tried this, but little to choose from back then, it worked well enough to provide deck functions if not cut short by internal battery life, and mostly needed a mic pre to function with most mics.

Have a dated mini-review in the FAQ 'choosing a deck' section on my site that may be of interest at http://www.sonicstudios.com/page38.html (http://www.sonicstudios.com/page38.html)

Well that's good to know, I was thinking what a pos..., so then what does "8, 44.1 & 48KHz WAV" mean then?

Originally the replacement for this, the neuros 3, was supposed to come out early this year, but has been delayed indefinitely because other products have been prioritized.  I was hoping to buy the neuros 3 for playback alone, because it's spec'd to support 24/96.  I'd really like a cheap HD unit that can playback 24 bit for the car/office/etc.

8kHz is the rate used to sample voice in telephone systems.  That option is for people who are recording a conversation or lecture and want the extended record time.

I used a Neuros II for a couple of years and found it very suceptible to sound generated vibrations causing glitches (skips) in my recordings. I'd stay away from one.

I found that you HAD to have a preamp in order to use this I did some consulting for Neuros on the new recorder that never took off. And it was a real shame it would have been great this recorder is not that great I found the internal amp to be very noisy and I found that more often then not this thing ether crashed or the power supply in this unit would self desitruct The model I was given to evaluate/keep blew up real good Joe at Nueros has some great ideas but unfortunately he has too many people working for him to stay focused on one product I was also a consultant for the 442 he wanted me to develop a preamp for that recorder as well but it was kinda hard since there was no input adjustment for the line input and no VU meters :) oh well.

Chris Church

I suggest edirol or m-audio units instead.
