Title: Ipod for playing back live shows
Post by: bhoy on October 23, 2006, 01:07:45 PM
As I was cleaning out my PC of the dozen's of BitTorrent'd shows, I started thinking that maybe there's an easier way to manage all these live shows.  Does anyone out there use an Ipod, or similar device for Flac playback?  I was thinking I could avoid burning audio cd's and just drop the files onto an Ipod, or other device, and listen to them from there.  Then the Flac'd shows could just be archived to DVD, or perhaps a hard drive for archival.

I know there were problems with gaps on the older Ipods, and I know you need to mod the Ipod to playback Flac's.  Just wondering if, in the long term - storage-wise, eliminating the audio cd step makes any sense.

Rockbox allows flac playback on ipods. Although with the recent firmware and new itunes, gapless playback is available without using rockbox. I just converted 300gigs of flac/shn to Apple Lossless and have been enjoying my ipod even more! ;D Still have the backup hard drive of shn/flac and just sent the ALAC's to a friend to copy for his ipod, gotta love offsite backup.

Bill,
Itunes 7.0 does gapless playback, so you should download that.  As for flac, i am not sure if apple has that yet.  But that would be a very nice feature, and hopefully its in the works.

For shows I want to listen to on the go I just decode them to wav and load them to my ipod.  When I'm done I just delete them and burn flacs to dvd.

another option is to convert the wavs/flacs to high bitrate mp3s for ipod enjoyment.  Dbpoweramp (at dbpoweramp.com) is a GREAT tool for this kinda stuff.

ahh it looks like you can Rockbox your iPod now to playback FLACs w/ gapless playback.  go to rockbox.org for more info.

has anyone tried this for an iPod?  according the manual i read for the ipod mini, there is no stable version out there right now.
