Title: DPA 4061 -> ? -> iRiver
Post by: thomasdk7 on October 24, 2006, 05:56:09 PM
Any suggestions on what to run between these two?
I'm considering these:

SP-SPSB-9 - SOUND PROFESSIONALS - KEYCHAIN STYLE SUPER MINI BATTERY MODULE.
It's a super small an stealthy battery box that runs on a 12v battery. Cost is $70.

Church Audio ST-9100 preamp. Currently on sale for $140. Runs on 9v battery, bigger than the keychain box. 0dB - 20dB gain.

I mostly tape loud rock concerts, and like my gear to be very portable (stealthy)... Is there any advantage of using the preamp with 0dB gain vs. the SP battery box?
Is there any advantage of setting the iRiver rec level to -20dB and the preamp to +20dB? (Noise issues?)

I would go with the bat box instead if you really want to stealth.

Out of the two choices, I would go with Chris' gear.

If you wanted a pre / AD combo, I'd recommend the AD-20.  Since I started feeding my iRiver a digital signal I haven't looked back.  For a little more money you could get a better AD stage and not have to worry about introducing noise by cranking up the iRiver's gain.

EDIT:  I guess the 'a little more money' may not be accurate if you don't have a way to power your mics already.

I stealthed DPAs w/ the MMA6000 and an R-1 many times.   I've never seen the preamp Church has, but I'd imagine its not as large as the MMA6000.

I'd opt for the versatility of his preamp instead of the battery box.   That's just me though.  I had the 4060's, and taped a lot of metal, and I never had to use the gain on the MMA6000 at all.  However, the 4060s are a little more sensitive than 4061s, so keep that in mind when interpreting my statement.
