EDIT: Just got off of the phone with Justin at Sound Devices. Yes, you can update the firmware without the hardware upgrade.

i've run 2 shows w/ 2.00 and 4 w/ 2.03 and everything worked fine.

i ran 1 at 2.03 and everything was SOLID

just got an 8BG ridata pro 150x CF card too 8)

Ran 2.03 tonight without the hardware upgrade. Channels 1 + 2 mic in, Channels 3 + 4 digital in. No problems.
