Title: best dvd blank media
Post by: panther65 on November 04, 2006, 12:02:53 PM
What is considered the best blank dvd? I burn an .iso image to nero using Lplex 24/96), as well as backup the tracked wave, flac, master wave files as data files. I've been using a Sony DVD-RW and have encountered a few bad burns. Are these re-writable dvds less reliable than write once? I saw somewhere where somebody suggested that Sam's Club had reliable DVDs. Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't use rw's.  I use only made in Japan or TY.  doesn't matter really what brand as long as it's made in japan.  I use mostly fugi and sony.

here is a good link

edit:  reason you don't see made in japan fugi is b/c they are TY.

A professional archival customer (there really is a profession like this) has found Taiyo Yuden the most consistent quality media. For his work, he always does a compare function with each copy for verification.  Mitsui is another good one to consider, but TY is the one he knows is consistent.

I have heard that some have good results with Verbatims that Sam's sells. I have had failures with the Verbatims, so I use the Sony's and Fuji's.

Taiyo Yuden is/was the supplier to Fuji.  Watch out for the non-japanese Fujis, though.

Taiyo Yuden is/was the supplier to Fuji.  Watch out for the non-japanese Fujis, though.

Watch for:
- companies (like Fuji and others) changing suppliers (read media code and package for made in Japan)
- fake media, says TY but is not
- if you write media, do a checksum (MD5 or otherwise) and *write it on the media*.  Check periodically

I've found it extremely frustrating to get good media, both CDR and DVD, no matter what you are willing to pay.  Everything is Memorex, or some other rebranded crap.  I ended up going with Maxell DVDs.  They are Taiwan made, Ritek media I believe, but they are at least consistent.  I would actually trust Maxell to do some quality control on the normally inconsistent Ritek branded disks.  I have not found (in Canada) a good source for Japanese disks.

No, you pretty well need to order them over the internet from the US.  One thing about doing that - you still get hit with the GST & PST when they come in, but they don't charge you that damn Canadian Recording Artists tax. ;D

DVD media is more stable than cd media, in my opinion, just about any name brand higher quality dvd from the brick and mortor stores should be fine.

I've used everything and never seem to have a problem.

I've used Memorex and fuji both made in taiwan and Nero shows them as Ritek and CMC.
Finding Made in Japan fuji locally is like finding the holy grail,I've never seen any made in japan dvd's in my area.
just my experience with DVD+ disks, I will be trying the Sony's next since they're on sale at Staples.
