Title: Differences between PSP-2 and 3?
Post by: Jason B on October 04, 2003, 01:22:09 PM
What are the differences in these two units? Physically and internally?

Lee, I notice you run one. Care to post a picture and some specs?

I *believe* that the 2 is transformer based, while the 3 is not. The 3 can also do M/S, unlike the 2.

Yes, where did it go? I cannot link to it on ADK's website anymore!

PSP2 uses transformers while the 3 does not.  The 2 has stepped gain settings (most of which are hot as hell for our purposes...I *believe* 30 or 35db is the LOWEST) whereas the 3 has variable gain pots.  Although I haven't used the 3, I have heard that the 3 isn't nearly as warm as the 2...due in large part probably to the move away from transformers.  Despite the better features of the 3, I have typically heard more people preferring the sound of the 2.

I think they are pretty different units internally.  As stated, the psp2 is transformer decoupled, the psp3 uses capacitors for de-coupling.  Also the psp3 uses the Analog Devices SSM2017 for gain (same as the Beyer MV100 and G-P DMic20), the psp2 does not.

that's important to note. I don't think that the psp3 is sonically in the same class as the V2. I've used the psp3, mv100, dmic20 and v2 extensively and while the psp3 has a better feature set than the beyer and the gp it doesn't sound any better, imo. I'd get a V2 before a psp3 anyday.

ditto what tim said. you can pick up a used v2 for 6 bills or so, used psp3 will cost that and then some, not worth it. and if you're getting it for stealthing, beware the sketchy battery cage. after a couple of years, you're gonna have issues. that is if the psp3 has the same design as the psp2. ask smiley, kinder, brothers and the guys at masterpiece about that thing. they've all had issues. with outboard power, no problem.
