Title: Which field recorders have plug-in power for microphones?
Post by: Chuck on November 17, 2006, 03:19:59 PM
OK, I already looked in the archive section... and didn't find this.
I'm doing some research and need a list of the popular field recorders and whether they have plug-in power for microphones. I need a list...

Thanks,
Chuck

Do you mean full phantom power, or just 5v plug in power?

I know the R09, MT 2496, and all the old Sony portable DATs have 5v power.

Yeah, any kind of power for a microphone...
I tbhought the old Sony's had 9v DC? I know the MT has 30v DC.

So is this correct so far?:

Edirol R-09               9v
M-Audio MT 2496    30v
Martantz PMD 660   48v
Marantz PMD 671    48v
Sony D3                 9v
Sony D7                 9v
Sony D8                 9v
Sony D10               9v

Yeah, you are right. I just need recorders. I got a bit carried away. I removed the UA-5.

Can you help with adding which of those have mic power and what voltage they deliver?
I'm not familiar with the specs of the devices you mentioned.

I think the iriver gives 2.5v, but i'm not 100% sure.

Keep in mind that plug in power is different than phantom power.  Plug in power is generally referred to as power for small mics like 5v or 2.5v such as DPA 4060's, SP-CMC-4's etc, phantom power is the 30v, 48v for full body mics that could not possibly run off plug in 5v or 2.5v.  Also there is T-Power which is 12v and I think 15v (video guys correct me) which are for special mics which require T power, such as some schoeps mics.   I think the SD 7xx series provides T power as well as phantom power.

So the ones I have listed as 9v are probably really 5v?

You would have to measure it to be sure, but likely they are 5v or less

Yeah, unfortunately, I don't have any of those recorders...  :(
I'll have to do some research.

I also have run in the past sony MD's (and friend used to run Sharp decks) and a sony M1 both of which supply plug-in power which is like 2.5v, you can also add the sony D100 which is the alternate version of the M1, it also has plug in power.  The HHB porta dats the 1000 and TC1000 provided 48volt phantom power.  The panasonic sv255 dat supplied phantom power as well.  The portable Teac dp20 (I think that what its name was) was the prosumer version of the Tascam DAP1, it too also supplied phantom power to mics.
