I'm looking to upgrade mic stand and was interested to know if anyone has any experience with the bogen quicklock type extension locking collar (rather than the knob style)
price being equal, which would you get and why
-
I have the quicklock and I love it. Not sure exactly how the knobs stand lock, but mine is very simple. Don't have to keep turning a knob to tighten it, just click it open and closed.

I like the quicklock adapter. It feels more secure, faster to set up, and faster to tear down.
Just to make sure we're talking about the same tips/adapters, these are the part numbers from the archive:
If you have the 1/4" male thread tip, the adapters you want to get to the 5/8" male threaded tip are:
Model | Starting Thread | Ending Thread
3111 | 1/4"F | 3/8"M
3366 | 3/8"F | 5/8"M
If you have the 5/8" male stud tip, the adapters you want to get to the 5/8" male threaded tip are:
Model | Starting Thread | Ending Thread
3102 | 5/8" F stud | 3/8" M thread
3366 | 3/8"F | 5/8"M

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...I get it, now. Sorry, I got confused and though you were talking about which adapters to use for mounting mics. I only have experience with the knobs, not the locking collars.

I only have experience with the knobs
he, he...that just sounds funny

 Perhaps I could've phrased that better. :P

yeah,,,so i need a new stand, after smashing my cheapo stand under my fender blues deville 212 on monday night...i thought i was being careful....
-
I have quick locks on my 17' stand and knobs on my heavier duty 13' stand...no problems with either...
-
Anybody know how big a stand the airlines will allow you to carry on? I have a 17' Bogen that I have to check. I would like to get a Bogen that was maybe 10' that I could keep with me.

How big is it closed? My 9' stand fits perfectly into a lacrosse stick bag and I haven't had a problem the few times I've flown with it. I know there are other stands that are MUCH more compact than mine.
A quick Google search yields that the maximum baggage size is 62 linear inches (Length + Width + Height). So even if your stand is four and a half feet long when closed, you're ok since the thing isn't more than a few inches wide...

Well a quick walk through security with my Bogen yeilds a trip back to the ticket counter.

Oh, whoops. I misread your post - that's the checked luggage limit. I think the carry-on limit is 22" x 14" x 9" but some sites just say 45 linear inches, which should still cover a collapsed Bogen - no way they're even close to 4 feet long closed. Hmph.

I think the dimensions apply until you have something that looks like you could spear somebody with it.
