Title: lowering loud clapping from file

I know there are tons of threads on this one, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I tape mostly acoustic shows and of course in between songs the crowd goes wild and blows my eardrums out especially if I'm listening on headphones. I have been using Audacity's "amplify" setting and going to -10db to take the clapping down. That seems to work the best for me. Is there a way to make the transition from the end of the song to the compressed part as well as the end of the compressed section and the start of either the next song or banter from the musician seem more professional and seemless?

Applying edits to the master WAV before splitting into tracks will help.  I think compression will help with what you're trying to accomplish.
