Title: R-09 external mic recommendation? (Internal mic hissing)
Post by: goosebump on December 01, 2006, 11:22:35 PM
Can anyone recommend a good mic under $100 to use with the Edirol r-09?

I've been using a sony ecm-ms907 with a pcm-m1 dat with fine results.  I just sold my m1 and want to know if there is a better mic for this price.

All the clips I've heard of the r9 with the internal mics have quite a bit of hiss, but never with an external!...(anyone any idea why???)
I could turn up my sony m1 gain all the way w/o any hiss whatsoever.

Also I'm looking for something at least as portable as the ms907 and as good quality.  The cores sound binaural are nice, but over $100.  I would also prefer not used.
Are there any possibilities for a decent clip on mic so I could put the r9 in my pocket and clip the mic to my clothes?

Thanks very much for your help!

Well...

I have to say that the internal mics on the R09 are WAY better than the 907 imo - they're surprisingly good for built-in mics.  If you really need to go with an external I'm sure others can punt some possibilities, but I'd honestly give it a try with the built-ins to see what you think without before you do.

What will you be recording?

I'll be recording classical music, sort of stealth.  With my pcm-m1 I always put the recorder in my bag and had the mic dangling out through the zipper.  Always worked great and was not noticeable.  Can't really do that with a built in mic.
Also, all the sound clips I've heard online of the r9 have hiss with the internal mic, but none with the external, so I figured I should try an external.

There is some hiss when using the R09's built-in pre - that's my one complaint about it. However, I have still been very impressed with the quality I'm getting from it (I'm a professional opera singer, so classical is the only thing I record).

I confess I haven't actually tried it with external mics yet, although I will be- I need to run it with my CMC8s (terrific mics for the price, but outside your budget- they run about $250) but just haven't had a chance yet since I'm usually running those into my other rig, formerly a JB3, but now more often my iRiver.

As for stealth:  I actually recorded an audition the other day (I was singing) - I had the R09 hidden in my handbag and it was actually LESS muffled than when I've done the same thing with my external mics - go figure!

If you want any clips of classical stuff, pm me - I have a few bits and pieces if you want to hear for yourself.
