I poked around a bit and didn't find anything, though I vaguely recall mmmatt mentioning he performed the replacement at some point. I'm considering upgrading my R-4 HDD for the occasional festival or two I catch each year so I have the option to run 4-ch, don't have to drop some sets down to 16-bit, etc.
Anyone cracked their R4 and identified their HDD make, model, & specs?
I'm wondering about the stock drive's RPM, latency, seek time, & cache size. Just want to make sure I get a HDD of proper spec for the replacement, without substantially increasing my power consumption.

When Busman did my upgrade I also had a new HD sent to him. I have the old one at home and can check what it is when I get back from work tonight. I could be totally wrong but I think I am remembering a Toshiba with RPM of 4200.
This is the one I replaced it with...

There was no noticeable decrease in battery time and if anything it increased a little bit. Also, I've never seen the HD slow msg with either drive.

According to Chris, you should notice a decrease in power consumption. I don't know how that's possible, but apparently these newer 7200 RPM drives are very efficient. I think mmatt also reported better battery life when he swapped a new drive in his R4.

OK... I'm home... The original drive in mine was a Fujitsu model MHT2040AT.
Here is a link to all the specs:

Excellent. Thanks!

i would use a 5400 rpm drive, a 7200 drive will run hotter and will probably kill the battery faster

The one I replaced mine with is 7200 and I have had no issues with heat or battery. While recording the R4 is tucked tightly into a Nova5 and it does not get hot at all.

I replaced my 40G with the equivalent Fujistsu (4200rpm) 80G drive.
I recommend using a 4200rpm drive. There seem to be Hitachi and Fujitsu (at least) available now.
