Title: Sound Devices 7-Series Digital Input Hiccups?
Post by: chris_jones on December 28, 2006, 04:34:34 PM
Has anyone ever experienced intermittent, random crackling in digital input on 7-series recorders, steadily decreasing over time in frequency of occurence?  Troubleshooting some strange sonic signature in a new rig of mine.  Slaving 722 to a boutique front end via AES or S/PDIF.  I've completely overhauled my signal chain, and during a week of burn in, heard static / crackle over an otherwise clean digital signal.  Box immediately locks at 1x, 2x, 4x sample rates.  Initially, noise was constant, then diminished, now is very difficult to generate at all.

Sending all gear away for inspection, but was curious if anyone had experienced anything similar with 7-series recorders using digital input.  I suspect the problem is in the converter stage in the external A/D and not the 722, but cannot be certain.  Ran 722 as digital slave for over a year with no problems, which leads me to believe problem is either in cables (highly, highly unlikely since I swapped many across each AES and S/PDIF format) or converter.

I have never had issues feeding from my Cable box(SA 8000)  or Computer (audiophile 2496 pci)

I have used varios cables and adapter in the chain including an analog  XLR > RCA cable
