The best way is to transfer digitally from the minidisc to your PC.  This requires an MD player capable of outputting a digital signal, and a computer with a soundcard capable of receiving the digital signal.  I'm not familiar enough with MDs to make a recommendation on players.

i hear if you do it digitally SS will transcode your files and compress them more

best way is analog out to line in on computer straight to wave format i believe

Playing your recorded MD in a full size MD deck with native digital output seems best way to transfer the 16bit/44.1K digital audio directly to computer soundcard with minimal data conversion as has been discussed.

There are very few shelf size MD decks being sold new with digital outputs these days, and these are quite expensive Sony models meant for musicians.  Best bet is to find a used consumer deck with digital output, and try one or more of your discs first to assure it is played correctly by the prospective deck before buying.

Least expensive USB soundcard found usually works as well as the most expensive card for this purpose, as long as the soundcard does NOT perform resampling as is typical of Creative soundcard models that resample everything that's inputted in digital form (these are NOT bit-for-bit accurate as a result of this resampling).

M-audio Transit USB connected soundcard does not resample, is <$100 new, and has ONLY optical Toslink input ability so make sure the MD deck has optical SPDIF digital audio output feature if using the Transit.

Other USB type external soundcards have RCA connected coaxial SPDIF input, few have both Optical AND coaxial input, and same for MD decks that typically have only one type output so make sure both match up.

Alternative to using a USB computer soundcard is instead using the M-audio microtrack or another make of flash recorder with digital input recording feature.  Then MD digital audio is transferred directly to be 'stored' in a flash memory card that can be easily read by USB connected flash card reader by the computer, and no computer soundcard is needed in this case.

Had to transfer a MD for a friend once, so I bought a cheap sony MDS-JE470 from ebay and modded it to give optical output. Ran the optical out straight into my jb3. Even went as far as to transfer the recording twice and compare them (apart from different amount of silence at the start/end, the two transfers were bit-for-bit identical, so I'm pretty sure this is a solid setup for MD transfers).

The biggest bang for your buck, if you want another MD player, is to get the MZ-RH1.  It will upload through its USB connection all MD discs including legacy discs from other MD recorders.  Additionally it records LPCM and uploads it losslessly to a WAV file.  All you need is a good mic and you are doing as well as most, better than some and not as good as others.

I taped a live gig of two folk-rockers in a bar the other night with a SONY ECM-MS957 (single point stereo) and it came out very well.  For MD advice I find no help here at all.  I do find help at minidisc.com which is devoted to MD and MD recording of live events.

I strongly disagree with this logic.  When you use optical digital output from a md deck, it sends the optical version of the data it's sending to it's own D/A.  So, the optical output stream is numerically equivalent to the waveform it is trying to send to its own analog output.  You can't do any better than that.  If you re-record the analog output, you are essentially re-sampling the waveform again.  In my opinion, the best way is optical out of the md deck into a device that can record a bit literal copy of the data it receives.

Simplest way is get a MD deck with optical output and run MD(optical) > NJB3.

I can do this if you got a few disks.  Not a lot (because it is Realtime), but a few would be fine.  PM me if you wish.

It's also the best way, in my opinion, because the njb3 is a bit literal recorder.  I too use this setup.

I am wondering too.  I recently purchased a Dell Computer and cannot seem to locate where to plug the cable in the back too.  I don't know what the slot looks like to transfer the sound aspect part of the recording too.  I use CD Wave to transfer to the hard drive but it comes back with no sound.  Any help would be appreciated st_kearney@nospam.yahoo.com
