Hey all... I have always loved the Earthworks sound in certain situations and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of these. I have a chance to pick them up at a good price but have never heard of the model or of a source from them.
I have been emailing with the seller, who seems knowledgeable and and honest, and am waiting for a set of pictures. The set includes the wood boxes with all the original eq.
A quote from the seller:
"I mainly used them for indoor recordings.. these are prototype cardoid ZX30 caps similar but better then the 77's."
Anyone know anything about them?

earthworks are power-hungry, make sure your power supply can dish out enough juice for them.

a friend of mine owns a pair of these. he's run them a bunch of times
you can find recordings on the live music archive with them. just search for z30x

Thanks for all the info. I have plenty of battery power so that should not be an issue.
As soon as I see the pictures I am really considering getting these. I've always wanted a pair of Earthworks. I think I can haggle down to the $600-$650 range. For anyone more familliar with the Earthworks prices does this seem like a good deal for a set with all original hardware in good shape?

considering that sr77s now run like twice what they used to cost, 600-650 sounds good to me. i believe the z30x's cost about 1500 a pair when they were first out

More correctly, Earthwork mics utilize the full 10 mA of power allowed under the Phantom Power spec. A lot of mics use less, so EW mics get slammed for being "power hungry" and even accused at times of not conforming to the spec. Obviously a mic that requires that much current is going to demand more power than a mic that runs on 3 mA of power.

I'd say this a very good price.

sounds like a good price, and if they perform similar to the sr77 than you are in good shape. I may be in the minority but I really dig the earthworks sound in the right situation.
