Anyone have any suggestions?? I am indeed a noob - and I cant afford *much* (definitely not the Neumanns!)- so something inexpensive but decent to start with... There is quite a selection on eBay:

a pair of AKG 451EBs for $51?... I should buy those :o
I ran a pair for years and still love the sound

well... hard to say. It depends - I can save up whatever, but I guess... around $200? Also depends on my tax return ;-)

I remember you mentioning you having an Iriver. Do you have a pre or is that gonna be a seperate purchase or would you prefera 200 dollar option that includes mics/power for mics>pre? If so, I believe Chris Church offers very affordable mic options. Probably get you going in the game with mics>batt box or 9v powered pre to go into your h-120 for around that price.
If you want to go for some full bodied 48v phantom powered condensors, you could find some studio project c4's on ebay close to that price. Of course then you would need phantom power and a pre. Maybe another 200 for a used digi ua-5 in the yard.

What are you running now?
As for buying mics, I would buy here, in the YS. You'll probably get a better price and you could trust us more (LOL).
As far as the low-price ones (Samson, Apex, etc). I wouldn't bother. I think AT853 are going to sound better and they can act as your stealth mics too. An "entry level" set of mics might be C4 (approx $200 used) or AKG 391 (up to $400 used).

Yep, iRiver. Ugh this is an expensive hobby!! I need to explore all my options though regarding power/pre...
I currently have what I need to be an effective patcher - the iRiver and a c02 thingy that eric gave me for xmas. He did give me a mic too - an Aiwa CM30. But I'm thinking about 10klf in June... it'd be nice to have a nice pair of mics.

Tell me about it ;D ALL my money goes to gear.
Well, not all, but a vast majority ;)
Richard made some good suggestions up a couple posts. For the money, I think the 853's sound great, really low pro and can get started with a batt box which will be cheaper. But you will want to upgrade as all of us do.
Those franken naks in the yard look tempting. Chris (orechall) is a great guy to buy from.

hmmmm... ok I will keep an eye on the yard sale. I'll start putting my pennies away and see where I am in a couple months. I guess I'm just confused as to what is good and what isnt. Samson and Apex are the affordable ones on ebay but they're no good? Or there are just better options here for roughly the same price I guess.

There are better choices in you price range than the samson and apex. But saving pennies is a good idea. Your gonna need cables, mounts, stand. Accessories can be found cheap, cheaper too when used but do cost some money.

I would also suggest putting some cash away and picking up some decent/good equipment. It will go a long ways. Below are my 2 cents ;D:
Mics: Studio Project C4's
Pre & AD: PS2 -> AD20 or a UA-5
Recorder: NJB3 or IRiver

Enjoy,

I'd like a UA5 because I'm familiar with it, and I've got my iRiver H120.

Behringer, another you probably want to stay away from.

OK no Behringers.
FYI last summer at 10KLF I ran AKG 391/3->UA5->iRiver -- but it was all borrowed (except for the iRiver).

Yeah I loved it so down the road I'll probably be saying the same thing.
I wish I'd had my little cm30 mic on xmas eve - I would have stealthed the Nutcracker ;-)

heheheheeeeee Mission Accomplished! My 1st recording! (other than 10klf)
IMO it sounds pretty damn good - I'm stoked, this little mic means business. I just wish it worked with a stand because I got quite a bit of crowd chatter and loud hoots & hollers - but otherwise - great!
Yay ;D

Yeah! Eric (mumboulin) gave it to me for Xmas. I didn't know what to expect, tried it out last night and yeah - Not Bad at all! Plugs right into my iRiver.
-
Ah yes, we have the technology... duct tape!
Well if I can, I'm gonna put this taxi show on cotapers but now I need to learn the next steps... tracking/flac-ing/etc.
Fun stuff!!

You could easily rig something out of a piece of aluminum stock from Home Depot. Maybe a "tab", made from a piece of 1.5" wide x 1/8" thick x ?? inches long. Drill it at one end, so that you could mount it to a clamp. Paint it black. Cover it in adhesive backed velcro, and have a matching velcro strap, to hold down the clip foot. Quick, simple, and a lot less messy than duct tape.
Too much trouble, Moke. You should have suggested to just go buy a Members Only jacket.
Seriously though, congrats on your first recording! +t
