Title: advice for mics which make you feel the energy of a concert!
Post by: natty jah on January 19, 2007, 10:41:16 PM
Hello everybody

I dont speak english very well but i'll try to be as clear as possible.
In fact i have the ecm-719 sony microphone which i know is quite shit for many of you!!
i know the sound is not very good, but i listened some recordings with better mics which have a much clearer sound and i dont feel the energy of the shows as much as i do with my mics... but i want new ones because i would like some clearer sound.
i have a mz-nh700 hi-md and my question is:
does some microphones (i cant spend much than 100 dollars) have quite the same "identity" as these ecm-719 but with a clearer sound...
also i would like, if possible, micros which dont need bass rolloff and all these things.

sorry, i am not very clear, but if you have any advice for me, please tell, i would love it

thank you for reading!
Ludovic

Once you get into high end mics it's more about where you want the presence boost (if any).

Schoeps: Full, tail ended sound

AKG: Bright top end

Agreed.... I think your best bet is to go to the archive and listen to a bunch of different sources and see what you like best.

To me Schoeps and AKGs both sound great but totally different.

When I hear Schoeps in general they are a bit colored but make the show sound great and often sound more warm.

AKGs to my ears do have a bright sound but smooth high end and a kick ass low frequency reproducton. But seem to produce the shows more accurately as to how it actually sounded (in general.)  I've found a very nice mix of 480s + A51TLs -> Busman Hybrid R4 that seem to reproduce the actual show very well to my ears/memory.  Since I've started using the combo I have had a few email me saying that the recordings actually sound better than they remembered the show.  The great thing is that with the R4 you can record the 2 different sets of mics separately so if you don't like the mix afterwards when you mix it you can grab your favorite 2 chan source.

Thanks to both of you!!
not sure what you mean with the word "end" (it doesnt seem to have the same meaning as "the end" in a movie lol)
anyway, i went to the archive section but i havent found a place where to listen to this bunch of different sources... so if somebody could tell me the link where i can go that would be great!!

thanks again!

Thank you Moke!
i can spend about 100 dollars
but, if there is "the MIC of the century" (for my wich i mean) i can spend more lol

edit: well, i dont really understand how this archive website works...
i know shn, flac, torrent etc,but since i have some downloading problems, are there in this site some mp3 samples with the gear lineage to browse easily?

Thanks again Moke!

Thanks for the link of church audio, but in the picture there is a big thing (is this the preamp) which seems t be quite heavy!
and i would like not to have such a big thing in my bag/pocket... well perhaps i am too much naive but i d'like to have a very "not heavy" gear, particularly for the summer festivals...    so is this thing necessary when you use such microphones?

ok!
i would like to hear the difference with and without this power box because i am not a "hardcore quality sound sound" (and specialist too!)
i just want a slistenable memory to share andfor me which is listenable and cool to listen, thats why i wanted a new mic because the ecm-719 are not that clear despite , as i said, in my opinion they make you really feel the power/energy of the show... perhaps it is just because they are "bad" and i just like "bad" mics...well... i dont know lol but i also like very good mics but in my opinion, you almost listen to a studio album when you have very good mics! thats why i am not really interested in it though the sound is incredible!
also, another thing, i d like to have a mic which doesnt make the difference if you dance or not!
with the ecm-719 i went to some concerts and it ididnt make the difference when i was dancing or not when you listen to th recording afterwrds...
and Moke, the mics of Chris are 149 dollars, and only for canada and U.S! so.... though i pmed him to have some info!

you'll want a battery box- they will add to your sound and give you more headroom to work with- as these rigs tend to take on high SPL

Tell you what $89.99 for my Cardioids and $20.00 for my battery box because I am in a good mood. :) Thats all you need to record concerts and have good sound quality and I do ship to your location please tell me where you are.

The only reason why most people would recommend a battery box or a preamp is that most MINIDISC recorders built in mic preamp sucks. And you are better off in most cases unless this is a really new md with a gain control for the mic input + the two level sensitivity switch. That you should use the Line input and not the mic input, as it will handle much more input level with out distortion. Even though your not looking for the best quality, distortion makes any recording useless to listen to. No mater how bad or good the mic is.

Its better to spend the extra few dollars and get a battery box especially when someone like me will sell it to you for $20!!! then to find out later that you did in fact need one. The users on here have been there done that. They know just like I do that in most cases you need at the very least a battery box and the ability to go into the line input. Its not all about voltage ether its about the fact that your line input will not power your mics so you need an external source to do so. If your mic input was designed properly ( most are not ) it would have the ability to attenuate before it gets converted into a digital signal. By then the front end of the preamp is over driven and no amount of digital attenuation after the fact can help that.

I am really not trying to sell you anything but if you want that deal I offered it still stands and when I get a proper email address from you I will send you a few samples of the recordings made with this mic you can also ask around here a lot of people here have my cardioids. I am sure they would be more then willing to send you a few seconds of a sound sample.

Nice +T.  Get more of your mics out there.  The best thing about these is they will not overload.  At least not at human sound levels!

T's for Chris and our international friend

I can honestly say if it was not for the USA I would not have a business. And if it was not for my American wife I would not have the life I have today. I love the USA!! I wish I was American some times. But I love Canada to much to leave her. Thanks for all your kind words.
