thinking of getting a fostex d5, are there any known issues with it playing back dds tapes? just making sure before i make a potential purchase.

I've recorded to DDS tapes in a Fostex D-5 before that was in an in-house rack at one of my local venues; no issues. Not sure about a lot of playback, but I would not expect a deck like that to give you issues.

I've got a D5 and almost always have used DDS tapes. Never remember having a problem, with either playback or recording.

also does the deck keep track of the # of hours on the heads? hidden function/display/counter or otherwise?

I bought two in 98 and 99 respectively. I still have them both. I had the heads replaced in each after about four years of heavy cloning. I have never had a transport issue in either one, and have run nothing but dds (vast majority 90 meters) for the entire time. No problems with either Sony or Maxell. These decks are just about bombproof imo. I believe they feature four motor transports. I have also never had a tape eaten or damaged in any way by a D5. Can't recommend highly enough.
