Title: Verticle R-4?
Post by: KLowe on January 25, 2007, 08:02:19 AM
Hello.  Can the R-4 record in a verticle position (ie gear bag)...with no HD issues?  Tonight will be my BusR-4's maiden voyage.
I sure the answer is yes...ie the new porta-brace pictures.

Last thing.  How long will the batteries last if using new energizer AA's?  3 hrs?

Thanks for the help.

Kevin

yes it can record in a vertical position. I've always powered mine with external batteries so I have no idea how long AA's will power it.

I've only ever run vertically.  No problems.

if you dig through the team R4 threads I think someone posted some info on internal battery times.

i ran on internals once, because i was in a pinch.  ~2.5 hours running 2ch at 24/48, with an external pre-amp.  no idea if you'd get less running 4ch.  i'm sure phantom powering cuts that number drastically too.

you seriously should look into getting the same external lithium solution we're all recommending.  i'd venture to say you'll get burned quickly if you're relying on internal alkalines.

I actually had to run mine the other night on AAs, because my lithium had not arrived.  Barely an hour running all four channels with phantom power at 24/96.  BTW, love my new R-4 Pro.

The most reported at this board was 175 mins tops. I'd recommend turning the backlight off and running phantom on one channel. 16-bit will give a slight increase in run time. I'd love to run internals on this thing, I'm thinking of picking up some 2700 mahs and running some tests. there are shows where a reliable 175 minutes will work.

True, but the size of a Li bat is just not that big.  I'd much rather have a reliable 4-5 hours than a reliable 175 minutes, but that's just me.  Hell I carry an extra Li as well.

With alkaline no more than an hour and 15 min, with nicad probably more like 1.45 min

I pretty much always run vertically. Regarding batteries, I've actually TAPED a DVD battery to the bottom of my R4 and it's semi-permanently attached like that, LOL! My DVD battery has been frankenstiened to the bottom of the R4 and I never take it off, just charge it while it's attached. The battery, and both lead ends are gaffered too, so less chance of unplugging. Ha! BTW, I get well over 6 hours runtime at 4xPhantom@24/44.1 with the LED on the whole time.

I spent the extra bucks to get a batterygeek 88 Ah battery, and all I can say is I ran a three hour show last night, and the meter on the battery never left full.  And the battery charged from empty in about three hours.  That is worth much more to me than waiting forever for the Wallys to charge, even though I have a few.

the first time you run out of AA juice in the middle of a set (which I did once) will be when you buy the external battery. you can spend anywhere from a few bucks and make your own to up to $200 for a batterygeek extraordinaire which will last upwards of 10 hours (which is what i got) at 24/48 and four channels. i even got a DC/AC inverter for the car to charge it when i'm halfway to the out-of-state show and remember i never charged the pack ...

Who knows the I.D. & O.D. (depth would be great too) of the power connector on the R4?  Would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi R4 is running 35 minutes with 2200 cells. Made 12 Volt external pack of 2 Dryfit Leadgel Sonnenschein with 20 470 uf 16 Volt Rubycon Z in parallel for optimal low impendance  better sound quality. LION impendance is to high and not good for sound.
