Title: UA-5 upgrades consideration, your opinions wanted
Post by: jkbyram on January 28, 2007, 11:34:37 PM
i am considering looking into another pre around 600 for a used unit. my ua-5 is only digi moded and i realize an upgrade to it would be helpful too. i am pleased with my recordings now but have the bug to change. damn addictive hobby! you guys have any suggestions?

I think having your UA5 warm modded would be a huge improvement, and would sound really nice with the 460s.

Thanks for the props!  I absolutely love my WMod+ and am totally going to regret selling it...

But I want a ACM671 or HDP2, so its gotta go...

What Tim said.  And Nick.  The Oade PLUS mods are really amazing.  I still miss my Transparent-PLUS mod UA5, but I think it matches best with LD mics.  Personally, I think the Warm-PLUS would match well with the AKG 46x.  YMMV.

If you're hacker inclined, you can do your own mods as well.

Only if you like to solder very small "surface mount" ICs, though.

I've got 2XAD8512 for preamps 2XAD8620 for buffer/ADC drivers, and an AD8620 for the RCA inputs on the back.  I also replaced the 'lytic capacitors on the front with polyester ones.

The sound is great on this thing, but remember to run it down at -6dB or so, since there is some distortion above that.  (Reported in another one of my posts.)

Anyway, good luck with it.  This is certainly a sweet, and DIY-friendly unit.

Kevin,

I can confirm that the 460's sound amazing with the WMod+ UA-5.  Terry has let me run this box for a handful of shows and I really enjoyed the sound.  If you would like some comps I can mail them out this week.

I'm trying the Busman BM2p+ out.  I just sent my UA-5 to him last week.  Had several people highly recommend this box with the 460's so I'm giving it a go.  Can beat it for $150!

thanks for all the responses. logically my best choice would be to upgrade my current UA-5. i have some recordings that are amazing with just the digi mod. i like the UA-5 with the 460's. to me the stock ua 5 with 460's sounds great but i've got the get "something" new bug. Todd i can send you my address if you don't have it anymore. i would like to hear your comp. todd can you pm me what doug is currently charging for mods?

I would also recommend going for the WMod+.  Can't beat it for the price.  Just awesome. Get used to the "something" new bug man... at least until you get married. :(
