that sample for the ribbon sounds awesome. I wonder what preamp/compressors were used though.

I've been eyeing the Fathead ribbon for some time. It's drawn some excellent reviews. That L2 also has my eye but, it's been "Coming Soon" for a while...

I think these mics comes from the same Chinese factoriew as the rest of them. If you buy a few hundred mics you can put your brand on the mic. Not bad because of that, but it has some small problems. One of them is that you can never be sure that one batch is the same as the next batch, so a mic reviewed a year ago might very well have a different set of components from the one you buy today. But if you are well aware of this as a buyer you can get a lot of mic for very little money.

Chinese is definitely the way to go, quality is going up every year while prices are still reasonable. They follow the known path of the japanese, start by shamelessly making copies of the best designs, some bad, some good. Sell them cheap. Once quality is up there, start doing your own designs and push out the existing players. American vs japanese cars is one example.

I've tested a pair of the Cascade Fatheads.  They sent me a pair for testing.  I like them a lot.  Will buy some this year for sure.  They also said they'll send me that stereo mic to evaluate!  Cascade is just north of me in Washington.  I'll keep you all posted.
