Title: R-09 Stealthing Tips == Advice Please
Post by: lbgspam on February 04, 2007, 03:16:19 PM
I am going to do my first recording tonight on my R09. Yes, I have had it for months without a show to attend!:(

Anyway, it turns out the venue has a no recording device policy so I thought, since the R-09 has mics I would try stealthing with the internal mics.

It should be a very loud show as the band is a hard rock bank (SLUNT is the name) Any advice on where to place the unit on my body?

I know, turn off the red light :)

FYI -- Team stealth has gone underground...

FWIW, the internal mics are going to suck probably. First, not sure how you're going to "stealth" the internal mics b/c that means having the unit out, which isn't stealthing. Next, those mics are going to overload if it's loud. You need to get some external mics, even if they are cheesy Giant Squids or something, and you're probably going to need a small/cheesy battery box too if the shows are loud.

Is there any way that I could join this team?

Not sure, I don't think there is any "organized" team stealth, there was just a general TS agreement in to not divulge too much about the jedi ways anymore publicly. Best way nowadays is to post publically just like you did, and then to request answers via PM. But, that said, I just gave you some good advice above. ;)

If you're on a budget, you might want to pick up a stereo pair of Giant Squid mics and one of their bboxes -- you could probably do that for under $100, and you'd be in much better shape to stealth a loud show inconspicuously without overloading your mics.

OK, thanks, I'm open to any PMs.

As for lbgspam with his R9, if you are close up you will probably end up with a bass heavy tape. I have an "acoustic" show that was recorded with just an R9 using the internal mics and it is very bass heavy. It even distorts in parts- and that was an "acoustic" performance. No drums although there was some electric guitar. Taped from about the 5th row.

Thanks for the help.  The internal mics do have a low high gain switch if that makes any difference?

I am not looking to buy equipment to do stealthing as I don't like stealthing :) -- too stressful.  I rather just tape bands that allow taping and support them by going to their concerts.

In this case the band does allow it, but the venue is not taper friendly.  I am likely just going to try to see them in more taper friendly venue later on.
