I didn't see mention of this here. Was just browsing the AKG site today and came across a press release:
http://www.akg.com/site/press_center/powerslave,id,107,nodeid,33,_language,EN.html
Also, did AKG move from Nashville, TN to Northridge, CA? Weren't there some guys local to them? Can anyone confirm?

I've read here that the Nashville service dept had moved to California, but found this in AKG's forum:

I apologize for the delayed response to your query. Repair for AKG wireless products and high end wired mics are still being done by Richard Land, the lead technician from the former Nashville office. Please send your defective wireless system to the address below. Attach the Service Authorization number 46555.
Land Audio Services
471 Walton Ferry Rd
Hendersonville, TN 37075
tel 615 338-4443
Regards,
Mark Zucha
Technical Services Rep
AKG Acoustics, USA"
edit to add: While going through the AKG forum, I found numerous complaints about the customer service from the new Los Angeles repair facility. This is particularly disturbing after having gotten excellent service and personal support from the Nashville facility. If I need any work on my AKGs in the future I will call Richard Land first as he is the one who took care of my mics and took the time to further my adult education ;).

From looking at the specs, the LTD's look to be identical to the XLS'. Anyone know anything different? All I can see is that they have different colored bodies (silver vs black)?
I agree the XLS' are fantastic mics. I think I'm gonna set a goal for myself to pickup another set in 2007. I do miss these mics. I bet they would sound sweet with the Aerco.

I think you're right re: LTD = XLS. I have to say, I like the blinger finish on the LTD's. It's nice! 8)

does Richard work on vintage AKGs?
I have a pair of 451s I bought in 1990
that need some work
If I had to venture a guess I would say yes he did. But I don't know what's up with this new situation. The above quoted forum post makes me think that Richard is now a factory authorized service agent. But again, I'm taking one plus one and getting three.

Here's some rather harsh/blunt comments about it:

Different freq. responses???
With that all said...I loved my XLS'. Sounds like many of us are missing ours.

I miss my 414s. made some great recordings w/those suckers.
but I like my LSD2 better. scratches all my LD itches and is much easier to futz with.
