I am planning on purchasing a digital SLR camera in the next few weeks and wanted to know if yall have any suggestions for me. I have been specifically looking at the D40 and Rebel. Thanks

The D40 is a nice camera, but is not on par with the XTi Canon. I shoot Nikon and between those 2 would go with the XTi. You might also check around for pricing on a Nikon D80 it is competetive with the XTi, there are also some great deals around on 30D Canons.

The D40 is nothing compared to even the D50, if you're gonna go nikon which is great be sure to at least get a camera which is compatible with all lenses. The D-40 can only use AF-S lenses, and not regular AF lenses

cool. thanks for the suggestions

If you're going to be shooting at high ISOs (think no-flash concert photography), then Canon has a slightly better reputation on the noise front. Also, FWIW, the 30d can do 3200 ISO and has a spot meter, both good things for concert photos.

It depends on what you compare. Tou are lens limited but the D40 outpreforms the D50 on high ISO noise.

for shooting lowlight concert shots, i'd recommend canon anything...you can easily crank the iso up to 1600 or even 3200 on a rare opportunity and still produce nice shots.
here's some samples of what both are capable of:
