Title: UA5 Line Out > R1 at 24 bit?
Post by: eclark on March 10, 2007, 10:45:35 AM
im thinking about picking up an R1 but I've got a couple questions first. i hope i posted this in the right place

I've got a UA5 so i'd have to run line out (rca or 1/4") > 1/8" line-in on the R1. is there going to be a difference in sound quality because this is not a "digital" cable (spdif/optical)? im really interested in the 24 bit but it makes me wonder about the connection. also, would it be any harder to set the levels/gain on the UA5 because i know that depending on the MonitorSW switch you can have different outputs on the line-out.

thanks
emery

I would stray far and fast from this idea.  Not because of any issues I see with the line outs themselves, but because the signal path with undergo many unnecessary A/D conversions.

The UA5 doesn't have analog passthrough, which means your signal would go:
Analog (mics)>digital like if you ran an iRiver or JB3 behind it
Then
Digital>analog on the line outs
Then
Analog>digital in the R1.

Not good.  If you want to go 24 bit with the UA5, look at a laptop, I'd say.
