Title: Three-Wire Mod for Dummies?
Post by: evilchris on April 02, 2007, 12:59:38 AM
I got a PM in response to my thread in the Yard Sale (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,82103.0.html), which suggested that I should "try these with a three wire battery box before giving up."  He also said that a 4.7k resistor in the right spot would do the trick.

Can anyone provide some insight on this?  I'm a total n00b when it comes to this sort of stuff, but I'm not a total idiot with a soldering iron.  :)

In other words, you would need to perform one of either modification to increase the amount of db's the mics are able to reproduce without distortion.

Sounds like you need to talk to Chris Church

Try reading here about powering the mics using three wire powering:

And here for microphone modification using a resistor:

My record doesn't seem to play properly anymore...:yack:

I may be wrong here but I was under the impression that the 3-wire power option was not good enough for these mics.

My mics were never configured to 2-wire and that leads me to beleive that when Chris ran his tests on them he either used phantom or 3-wire power.  As I stated in the other thread they didn't do very well on the test.

I beleive they have 1.6% distortion @1k @ 114db spl before the 4.7k mod and something like 0.4 after.

I would pm Chris Church or Poorlyconditioned or maybe one of them can chime in and let us know what the deal is with these mics.
