I just picked up a barely used R-1, which appears to be in excellent condition. It appears to work fine with the 64 mb CF card that came with it. After doing some research here and elsewhere, and speaking with some other R-1 users, I purchased a Kingston Elite Pro 4 gig CF card. For some reason, this Kingston CF card will not format -- when I scroll to "format card," and click "OK to format," it jumps immediately to "completed" -- it does not show the "now working, do not remove card" message. When I try to record, I get a "no song" message (which the R-1 manual indicates means the CF card isn't formatted). I am able to go into recording standby, and can see recording levels, time remaining, but as soon as I hit record or play/pause again, it reads "no song."
My R-1 is running firmware version 1.03.
If anyone could help, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice.

try reformatting it with your computer.. hope this helps..

Thanks. I tried doing that. It is hit or miss whether the R1 will record, after I format via the computer. It seems that it will record, sometimes, after I reformat it on the computer, but only if I drag an mp3 onto it (so it's never really recording on a 'blank' CF.
It will let me delete a file properly (the "now working, do not remove card" message comes up when deleting), but it still will not let me reformat the Kingston CF on the R1. It's rather frustrating, as I thought this seemed like a nice escape from the dreaded "DAT misload" days.

Maybe you just got a bad card. Any other device you can test it out on?

Thanks; I thought of that too. I purchased 2 new Kingston CF flash cards, so I tried the second one, and the same thing happens. Like computers, gear is great when it works, but nightmarish when it doesn't.

did you buy the cards together? things that tend to not work come in batches.
Does the 64 CF card record in all modes? mp3 16 bit? Can you get the 64mb CF card to do the same thing as the kingston? I know the 64mb CF card is already formatted, but can you record on it, then delete the file. turn the r-1 off. turn it on, then format the 64 CF card?
I have not found the r-1 to be hit or miss when recording. Once formatted the 4 GB card work very well. I have used the same card in my r-1 and it works well. I know that does not help you, is there any card that will format.

Check to make sure that your computer formatted the 4GB
card as FAT32 rather than NTFS.
Does the card work properly in the computer that formatted it?
Try copying lots of files to the card. Cards come with good warranties,
so if you are having trouble take the card back to the dealer and ask
for a replacement.

It is formatted to FAT32. It is recognized by the computer (and can be formatted via the computer). It is recognized by the R1, but it doesn't let the R1 format it. I am working with the manufacturer to try to get the issue satisfactorily resolved.
