Just curious if others have experienced this with recent updates? I recorded a show last night and noticed a missed sample. Was also recording to DAt so no biggy...but i would like to know if others have this issue or if there is a specific patch to fix that permanently? ???

I'm assuming you're using RockBox here...
Can you please specify:
- analog or digital recording
- what rockbox version
- did you see any warning text on the display
If you're using the REP, I think there's another report of recording troubles. I don't use the REP and have so far had no issues at all, so this one may be REP related only. And that version is unsupported...
Please install the current official version of RockBox and see if you can reproduce.

Hey petur...I was using rockbox with the REP installed. I downloaded from Mmmm's link about a week ago. i was recording digital via optical cable.
So the REP has a missing sample bug?
Can someone please give me a link to a stable build for recording? I want to stop using my DAT...but I'm glad I ran it as a backup or i would have been screwed.
Also, do i have to wipe Mmmm's build w/ REp off completely first before updating to a current build...or does it overwrite it automatically?
Thanks!

I honestly don't know... What bitrate were you using?
I have no issues at all with the current official build, that's all I can say.
To install the official build, just unzip it on your h1x0. The location of the rockbox.iriver changed recently, so make sure there is no rockbox.iriver file in the root of your device, the only place allowed now is /.rockbox
Will try to revisit this topic when time is on my side ;)

fyi, a related report...

UPDATE
This discussion has revealed a bug in the SPDIF handling during recording which should now be fixed.
The latest download from http://build.rockbox.org/ (http://build.rockbox.org/) now contains this fix, note that current REP is not fixed yet!
Please try and let me know if this fixes your problem.
UPDATE
There wasn't a bug at all...

Sorry to ask a silly question, but I too record with a h120 and I uncertain of exactly what REP is / does... could you guys help me out on this one?

REP = recording Enhancement Pack
It's a set of patches to enhance the recoding screen, iirc it contains a way to increase fontsize and levelmeters, a peakmeter histogram, and maybe some stuff I forgot.
Personally, I don't use it because I see no use for it (I'm the set-and-forget type of user), plus it has the disadvantages:
- always misses the latest bugfixes and extra's because it is build by Mmmm
- officially unsupported
-
thanks for that! sounds like it might be a neat thing if it was supported and maintained properly, but like you I too am a set and forget recorder. Having begun my recording obsession with MD's, I am still in awe of all of the details given on the screen of the RockBox OS, so I think I'll stick with it as well ;)
-
I've had that happen. I'm quite sure in my case it was a funky optical cable between the UA-5 and the H120. Mine wants just the right cable, without any special adapters for right angles or size. When I try to use some cables it won't work at all. When I put in something "just a little bit wrong" I get "skips" of missing music.
That's my observation anyway.
-
I have had that happen quite often when I first bought the machine. I have since come to realize that when you delete items off of the H120 and continue using it without reformatting, the HD will read as full at times and skip in places. I've recently started reformatting after about three shows and have not had a problem since.
-
I don't think it is the optical cable because I just bought it brand new and this was the first attempt at using it. I also reformatted my drive a few days prior to the show.
Actually i just defragged it...how do you re-format the drive and what is that actually doing? Do I have to wipe everything off and then reload it all?
:hmmm:

On my last two outings, with my iHP-120, I got:
warning: 000000001
flashing on my record screen.
The recording has dropped samples.
I run the REP too.
-
y'all have to stop using the obviously faulty rep builds; that's the only way the dropped samples will go away.
i've been using my h120 with a normal non rep build since last summer and have had no dropped samples, ever.
the supported builds are guaranteed to be bit perfect via digi in.
Does the regular build have the good meters? I guess it's time to go back for me.
-
Nope...you can't have the fatty meters...but at least your recording will turn out. ;D
I just switched back today...Hopefully RRE turns out on Tuesday!
-
Yeah, I just switched back to the supported version of RockBox on both my iRivers...
I hope they get the REP straightened out... :(
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the main reason people are using the REP is for the larger peakmeters.
If that's the case, would a better long-term solution perhaps be to politely ask the REP guys what's required to get the larger meters into the daily builds?

Well if that is the case, I could add the large peakmeters to targets that have enough screenspace (like the irivers). I don't think that part of the REP is causing this issue, but rather the histogram stuff. I'll see what I can do ;) (time is the major problem here)

I think this is the MAIN reason for the REP build being so popular. Most record with analog-in, tho the dropped samples are probably occurring via analog in as well.

That would be really cool but honestly, I have lived with the thin meters for so long that it isn't a big deal. I am still using what has been working for me since last summer, daily build: rockbox-h120-20060717. I won't go to another build until I hear from you guys that it is the build to go to.
-
I also liked the balance meter in the REP build. I never used the histogram.
-
Hmm, I've been using an older rep build and I haven't had any problems with dropped samples on digi in or analog. Adding the fatt meters to the daily builds would be a great idea though.
-
I am using Mmmmm's REP from 2006 September 12 and have not had any dropped segments. Recorded from FM and mic in but not digi. I like the screen enhancements of the REP and unless I have issues I don't plan to change.
-
I run rep without issue and LOVE the peak meters but could care less about the histogram.

Hello, It's me... ::)
To get this sorted I'm going to have to have some people test out some builds for me as I don't have anything that I can use as an optical-In signal, so I can't reproduce the problems you've all been having. Any volunteers?
Petur: The peak meter height patch scales the peak meters to the screen size (if they are too large) so that whichever target you are using it will never break the screen layout. Even the recorder can have size 2 peakmeters when recording via internal mic!

I would be happy to test.
I have an iHP-120 and a iHP-140. I have not been able to reproduce the warning: 000000001 at home, but I have gotten that error twice while recording in the field.
Both have the Real Time Clock mod, but since I don't know how to patch Rockbox, they are not enabled. I went back to the regular Rockbox build because of problems I was having.
-
I should mention that I taped Railroad Earth in Las Vegas a few days ago and my recording came out great. I did go out and buy a quality optical cable though. A Monster Cable THX I100FO. It was like 15 bucks or something.
The only thing is....is that I had already put an oficial build of Rockbox back on my H120. So I don't know if I got a good recording because of the new, better cable or because of the official build. :hmmm:
Either way at least I pulled the show...
-
Ok, a slightly modified version of the REP in my sig... Needs lots of testing from as many people as possible to find out if I've fixed it or not...
This build includes JSMikes recording debug screen which is activated by toggling the remote lcd on and off while you are recording (Vol - key on remote, press stop to exit the debug screen). I think that on this screen you should see the top bar staying on 0. if it changes there could be a problem... This screen is a bit new to me so cant be certain.
You can obviously still record as normal....
If any errors or dropped samples come up with this build then post here or in the REP (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=2513.0) thread over at Rockbox.org and I'll try something else

fwiw, I have also gotten the error (warning 00000001 & 00000002) that Chuck speaks of. (We spoke of it @ misticriver, Chuck.) I have a 320 using rep via Paulheu's build. I can find no reference to these errors. Could these be part of REP?
And thanks very much to Mmmm & Petur for your work in Rockbox!
Joe
-
I can find no reference to these errors. Could these be part of REP?
It appears that this is happening uniquely with the REP, so it seems the REP is at fault rather than Rockbox itself.
The errors are due to the overflow of some buffers:
The warnings as defined in pcm_record.h:
/* pcm (dma) buffer has overflowed */
#define PCMREC_W_PCM_BUFFER_OVF 0x00000001
/* encoder output buffer has overflowed */
#define PCMREC_W_ENC_BUFFER_OVF 0x00000002
If you want to help fix it, it'd be great if you could test the build in my sig and see if it still happens... :)
-
Sorry...I've got a bunch of shows this week - but if its still an issue next w/e I can help out w/ testing. Good luck with isolating the issues guys...and once again, thank you soooo much to Mmmm and petur.
-
I won't have an opportunity to fully test the REP in Mmmm's sig until May 9. But, I will be in the same club, using the same rig that I used when I had problems, when I do get to testing it.
-
Mmmm - Would be glad to test.... BUT I am on h320. If you want to compile for it, I'll run it.
-
I seem to have fixed it now so that even less buffer is needed while recording while using the REP than when not using it!
Only testing will tell if this fixes the problem, so please please give the build in my sig a go (H120/140)...
If you are using the H3xx: H3xx build HERE (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/martin.scarratt/Rockbox/rockboxH3xx.zip)

WoW! That's cool! I plan to test that build in an iHP-120 and an iHP-140 next Wednesday night.

Good stuff, just make sure that you have the recent version (that I uploaded just before my previous post) and not the one of a couple of days ago... :)

Yeah, I've got it... 05-01 is the date on the files. You say there is a debug screen? Anything I need to know if it pops up?
-

No, I got rid of that seeing as I have seemingly sorted the buffer problem... So it's just record as normal and see if the same problems pop up. If not then it's probably fixed!
-
Hi,
I've had the same problem saturday night, and we've talked about that in another topic...
IF I understand what you say is : I take your latest rockbox version (in your signature) and it should work fine because you fixed it??
Sorry but my comprehension of that problems, and my lack of english pratice can't be good in that situation ;D
Bye

I've had a rockbox+firmware dled from their "official" site, not the REP (the one i just installed sunday from the link a member sent me in the topic) ...It has new features, i mean new bars on the bottom...
I am going to tape some shows saturday & i hope it won't let me down :hmmm:

Well....maybe, or maybe not... it needs testing.
It's also possible that it is a scheduling error which I think JSMikes has fixed in the official build so maybe it never was anything to do with the REP in the first place...especially if you encountered the error in an official build..

Mmmm, I´ve always been using your latest REP-build and never had warnings or drops on ANALOG-line in and I recorded 17 concerts since August 2006. Sometimes I record via optical line-in from my dvd-recorder to my H140 without any drops or failures or warning messages but optical makes only 1-2% of my recordings.
-
Well, I tested the 05-01 Mmmm REP build last night and....
All is good. I recorded the same way I have been, with and the iHP-120 and IHP-140. No warning messages!
...and more importantly, no dropped samples :)

So, if you had done that before the fix, would you say that you would definitely have had some warnings or dropped samples? or is it more of a hit and miss affair?

I just found this thread -- My iRiver H120 will look like its recording - meters going, everything is hooked correctly -- I usually patch w/ coax cables to my friends UA5, sometimes to the soundboard -- and it shows levels, and even freezes now and then as it does when its saving - but when its all over and done with, theres No File on the thing! It doesnt record - or if it does, its not saving??? Has anyone else seen this? i havent updated the rockbox in it since last summer, s'pose I should. This is just frustrating because I cant trust it...

I got the warning on both recorders a while ago while recording in a club. A few days later I tested for 8 hours at home, and got no warnings....
I figured it was a fluke. Then I go to record again at a club and one recorder gave the warning that night. This was with a recent, REP build. Then I switched to the 05-01 build. I tested at home and got no warnings. I tested last night, at the club and got no warnings.

Do you also see it count the filesize? (you do start a recording I guess?)
If possible, save what's on the disk and do a reformat of the drive

I have not yet upgraded to Mmmm's new build for h320, but have NOT gotten the buffer overflow errors in 3 outings to tape.
So to recap, I got error 0001 in one outing,
I got both error 0001 & 0002 next time out.
Three shows taped and no errors.
All on same Kosh build w/REP. Hit or miss for sure.

Ahh...thanks for testing, so we can't really tell if its fixed or not from one test...shame.... the only way to know is if lots of people give it lots of testing but it seems the uptake is slow...oh well... time may or may not tell.... ;)
-
I taped a show 2 nights ago with your latest updated-sig-H1xx REP Mmmm. No problems at all. Never had problems with your sig-REPs anyway ;).
Didn´t use optical line-in though but analog.

Arni, you are buying gear like it is your last day on earth!
If I was you I would sell some gear and get a Sony SBM-1 (Oade Line Mod)
recorders: Iriver H140 rockboxed, Sony MZ-RH1
mics: Church Audio STC-11(with 4.7K mod), MM-HLSC-1, MM-HLSO, SP-CMC-8, SP-TFB-2battery boxes: SP-SPSB-9(12V), MM-CBM-Mini(3x3V), MM-MBM "Mint Box"(3x3V)
preamps: Church Audio 9100(2 wire), MM-Stereo Preamp
-
I will continue to use and test Mmmm's new build.

When I check YOUR sig I still see more gear in yours than in mine ;), so what?
Why should I get a Sony SBM-1? I don´t like DAT and I need to be stealthy at ALL my taping sessions ;).
I´ll be selling my SP-CMC-8 cardioids(2 wire) and my MM-preamp soon, but keep the rest ;).

Well, my signature is more diverse. I have 1 pair of electret bodies, 1 48v card condensor pair, 1 48v omni pair, ect. You have plenty of electrets that are all very similar.
The SBM-1 is not a DAT, but rather a Analog to Digital convertor. It is small enough to stealth and is a huge improvement over the iRiver ADC.
We are both gear sluts, I just am pointing out that you have quite a bit of similar gear.
-
;D gearsluts! HAHA
I test lotsa stuff and sell the ones I don´t like.
I´m totally happy with my H140 recordings and don´t need an AD converter ;).
As I NEVER do open taping I won´t buy some bigger and more expensive phantom powered mics. Won´t use any mic-stand neither.
Am sure if I lived in USA my gear would be different (for open taping sessions) but here in Austria STEALTH is the only way to go and stuff should be as small and tiny as possible ;).
I´m taping since 1987 and stuff is becoming smaller and smaller.
I taped 20 shows since August 2006 so I had plenty of time for testing my gear.

I've updated the REP (see rockbox forums). The REP is up to date with the current build now and so includes all JSMikes updates to the scheduler and also my modification to improve buffer usage, so hopefully that should fix the problem... Get it in the usual place..... :)
