Im searching a mic for recording in the natur, traffic,... The mic should record the ambience in good stereo.
What can you recommend?
-
Hi Peter,
the same SP-TFB-2 omnidirectional from soundprofessionals I recommended in the German Mini Disc Forum ;).
-
any good stereo mic with low self noise will be good for nature recording .
if you are working in humidityb arias , check if the mic can stand it .for eacy scorring work ms configurated setups
you will need good wind protection as well (zepeline)
the price could be from few handred $ for small sony ecm to few fousands for neuman 191
inbetween you have few good ms stereo mics as sanken 5/7/9
pearl single poit stereo microphones ms 2/ 8/10/20
vp-88 from shure is working grate with urban noise or loud sounds , less with quet ambients
AUDIO TEHNICA 835 st
you can make small set with directional microphone and figure of 8
ambient de makes back electrt figure of 8 microphone that can sit over any other mic
akg blue line with 2 mics
mbho ka 200/500 with figure 8 ka 800 capsules
schoeps mk 4+8, 41 +8
sennheiser mkh30+40 /50/60( that is the lowest self noise configuration you can get )

While we're at it suggest also considering Sonic Studios stereo-surround HRTF baffled DSM-1S/H mic with WHB/N windscreen headband made by my company that's specialized exactly for this purpose.
Optimum performance when system is configured with custom configured external low noise preamp into R-09/MT or similar portable deck.
Hundreds of ambient sample recordings with notes on the specific gear used at: www.sonicstudios.com/mp3.htm (http://www.sonicstudios.com/mp3.htm)

i think he´s searching a cheap mic around 100$ ^^
-
Check out the MSH-1O's over at www.naiant.com (http://www.naiant.com) get a pair of those and throw a j-disc in between them. With windscreens a matched pair is 54 bucks...they sound great too.
-
If you are just looking for a cheap pair of mics, i would reccomend the SP-TFB-2 too. They make true binaural recordings and they sound alright in stereo too.

Among naturalist the mic of choice under $100 is the Shure WL-183 there are many sites that teach you how to use it efficiently and to wire it to a Minidisc recorder
enjoy

Hello,
I found a huge difference of price in Europe for the Shure WL-183.
144 euros at Thomann!

any hints to buy them cheaper around here?
Thanks,
JM.

For this I use an MS set-up of Sennheiser MKH 30 & 40 in a Rycote.
As the MKH series are RF condensers they work happily in damp conditions where all others fail.

Audio Technica 3032 omni (pair) Lower than published self noise (about 8db) and very good performer in cold, hot, humid conditions. About $150 each. Check naturerecordists.org and You will get lots of info about this mic and plans/audio samples of various stereo arrays using 3032. I use 2 in a homemade Jecklin disc array for quiet ambiences as well as recording music.

Ambient sound recording is something I do a lot of -
I have a pair of AT3032's, excellent mic for nature work. I use it with a Sound Devices MixPre and R-09.
I also use a Rode NT4 in a blimp, Behringer C-2's when it's dangerous and SP-TFB-2s when I don't have my other gear with me. Actually I carry and R-09 and SP-TFB-2's (high sensitivity) everywhere I go.
You can listen to all here...

...just search for NT4, SP-TFB-2 or AT3032
BTW: This is a nice long ambience recorded on a pair of NT5's (same caps as the NT4)

However at the end of the day, a good place to start is a nice single-point stereo mic like the Rode NT4 or Audio Technica AT825 since they
1. Are a lot easier to handle. Setting up/taking down mic pairs is long and tedious when you are in the field....and requires stands (http://www.digifishmusic.com/public/images/beach-nerd.jpg) etc
2. can be put (http://www.digifishmusic.com/public/images/nt4-in-blimp.jpg) in a blimp (http://www.digifishmusic.com/public/images/blimp3.jpg), which is a necessity when there is *any* wind about or you are on the move (http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesViewSingle.php?id=44480) :)

Here are a few pictures of my Jecklin disc setup. AT3032's mounted on K&M stereo bar. Padded handle from Trew Audio screwed into center hole in the stereo bar and a spring loaded mic clip is attached to that. The mic clip holds the disc which is made from an Ikea children's stool pad, some kind of dense foam which I cut a groove out of to clamp to better. The whole thing can be handheld, table top stand held or mounted on any 5/8" threaded stand. One could forgo the handle and mini stand business of course, and just attach directly to the stand.

That's excellent (+T) :)
I will post some pics of mine, I used wetsuit material to make a cylinder about the size of a persons head.
