yes, i believe the other 46 preamps are backups.

You have to be kidding, I'm sure.  But I still can't figure out what they would need that many pres for under any circumstances.

i'm guessing these were used as the head end for a live multitrack recording rig. i don't know phish's setup, but i'd imagine they use(d) a 48 channel console, hense the 48 preamps for the recording rig.
