Title: NAK 300>Sony D5>Iriver 120 Possible???
Post by: sierra on May 11, 2007, 08:38:44 AM
Thinking of pulling the trigger and adding the bit bucket to my rig again. Is the Iriver a good choice in this case? 140 buy it now on ebay is the one I am thinking of. I might add some stealth mics in the future as well.

The iriver will certainly take a Line-In signal from the D5.

If you don't need the digital (optical) input, you might be able to find an H320 for less than the H120.

The last show I recorded was Tascam PE120 (Nak300 clones)> UA-5 analog out> iriver H320.  Worked great!

not sure about the iriver...but i have tested the nak300>sony D5 >line in ->Nomad JB3 and nak300>Nak mx-100 >line in ->Nomad JB3 with good results...the D5 serves as a good preamp...but I would recommend getting the Nak mx-100 mixer...and go line in...
It is great not having to flip any tapes...if you go with the D5 ..you can always tape down the record/pause buttons...

Two Ratdog shows I taped last year are up on Bt if you want to hear the sound of the above rig

D5s are noisy as hell - especially at this point in their life cycle...

I ran Mics > D5 > JB3 for a while - I found you reach the limits of the D5 well before the limits of the JB3...- i.e. -  you had to run the D5 a bit on the hot side...makes the metering a bit confusing...

I might try to run the Naks right into the 120 - they have relatively low output and might not brickwall - worth a shot...

I normally just pass the signal straight through, blank tape in the deck with Record button pushed down only. I'll give it a shot hopefully next weekend.

You dont even need the tape - just push up on the little tape sensor in the upper left corner and push record - that will turn on the electronics - but not the motors...

My "Naks" are very quiet.  I have to crank the UA-5 almost all the way to get sufficient levels unless it's a really loud show.  I don't think the iriver could provide enough gain without introducing a bunch of hard drive noise.  Of course YMMV...
