Title: stand height
Post by: dave on October 23, 2003, 10:55:14 PM
hi, i am wondering how a shorter stand( maybe eight, nine, or ten feet) would affect the sound of a recording in a larger venue like 10,000- 15000 or an arena.   thanks,
                                   dave

depends upon where you're recording from.

8 to 10 feet, however, should be good regardless of what kind of venue you're taping in.

also depends upon what kind of mic configuration you're using.  let us know the specifics & we'll be able to be more exact in suggestions.

no... train of thought derailed there for awhile.  it happens when you've been without sleep for almost 20 hours.  i should probably go to bed now ::)

I guess it's a matter of preference.  For most situations, I find myself running anywhere from 6.5 - 9 feet up.  To me, anything more than 10 feet is usually overkill, unless it's DMB and you need to be .002 microns from the stacks (been there, done that)

I also usually run 6-1/2 - 9 feet, but it's highly dependent on venue / soundsystem / crowd.  At one small venue in Cleveland, the Odeon, I run as high as I can - around 14' with my "big" stand - because it just plain sounds like ass otherwise.  Ideally, I'd run in the balcony, but they usually reserve the good spots up there for fanclubs and the like, if the balcony is even open.

'Course, this probably doesn't help because I don't tape much in massive arenas.

actually, one of my better recordings came out of an arena,.  But it was astealth job and the mics  were head high....not sure what I'm trying to say, still schwilly......

i used to run a bogen 3373 and it maxed with the mics at like 7.5ft. i now use a 3372 and i get closer to 8.75ft, altho i have never gotten out the tape to measure, i guess based on my head height and arm reach.

I saw a dude at the avalon for mike that had his stand at about nipple height. I didnt ask why but I thought it was odd. I think they were DPA mics

Definately scope out the PA arrangement and adjust stand height accordingly.  I don't ever recall running anywhere remotely over 10' max ever....

:P....actually those were phishin's mics.  They were at nipple height because his pre wasn't working.  He just didn't pack them up till the show was over.

They were AKGs also.....

i personally think around 14' is good
seems to cut the crwod down nice yet not 17' where the crowd can be cut so much ts "dead" sounding

my stand only goes to about 12.5' though

Bass response is a factor in stand height, yeah?  I know that generally you can hear a lot more low end from about 6' (where my head is) compared to just a little higher.
