I am looking for a stereo point mic that will be primarily for sound effects / ENG / film work (think on a boom or as an interview mic)... although i would like it to be nice enough (and flexible enough) to use in a live music environment with decent results.
i have a mp-2 to provide the power, but if it ran on batteries as well as phantom that could be a benefit.
i have a budget of about $500-ish, but would like to be under that.
I have seen the following and was looking for first hand experience with these and recommendations on other options as well.
Shure VP88
Audio-Technica AT825
Audio-Technica AT835ST
Audio-Technica AT815ST
Sennheiser MKE44-P
Pearl MS2/MS8
beyerdynamic mce 82

forget about your budget restraints and go all out with the Neumann RSM191

while i am sure that neumann is a fine mic, a bit of overkill for my needs.
we are also looking for recomendations on a nice video camera. max budget 2k, hopefully half of that. user friendly and field tough are a bonus.

A friend picked up a Canon XL2 from ebay for $2100. He raved on how good of a deal it was
I've tried several mics I already own. None of the above. My Oktava mk319's (ld cards) worked best on a boom. Had them mounted like they were running XY on a stand. But both facing straight. Very low profile & out of shots. Running them straight into the XL2.
Hope this made sense. been drinking.
Curious what you find.

Some ideas -- stay with a mono mic on the boom. Better sound quality at price point, more to choose from, easier to use for the boom operator and probably lighter to carry out on the boom.
My reasoning: difficult enought to catch the dialogue, mostly impossible if you need to care for stereo perspective as well. Almost all film dialogue is mixed mono anyway, in a surround mix it comes from the C speaker. Ambience and music and effects come in stereo or even surround.
Idea could be Octava Mk012 with two hypercardioid capsule. Use on a boom, two on a stereo bar for music. Added benefit is that you can add cardioid or omni capsules if you preferr that for music.

There is an AT-825 in the yard sale for $150 (I think it is). Hard to go wrong for that.

I'll sell you that AT825 and the custom cable for a song....it would prob work well for ENG/film...I used it to record some sound effect stuff....incredibly realistic when a train was coming by...runs off AA or phantom
shameless YS plug over...thank you

audio technica 835 would be the best for your needs , it can act as mono shotgun and work as a stereo to pick up the ambiance
the vp-88 is fine if you intend recording very loud signals , not for the boom work .
for interior dialog recording look at oktava to complete (shot guns not work well in reflected spaces)
whats more important , look for some small mixer so you can work normally
sd mix pre , wendt 2 or used shure 33 . the camera inputs are about the worse you can get to amplify the signal and its almost impossible leveling dialog during the shooting.
lets say that you need about 2 grand work normaly ( dont forget wind protection , suspention , good boom and snake cable , so you can monitor the camera)

i found this... in case anyone else was interested.

i really like the pearl b/c it is small, but it is way outside my budget.... i will probably bounce between the shure vp88 and the at835st... but i will just troll ebay and google to see which pops up first in my price range.

Don't forget to look at the Rode NTG-1/NTG-2. It's pretty affordable and I find it has a very nice sound to it when running it on a boom.
