I'm just now trying out my Edirol R-09. I have the Giant Squid Powered Omnis but I am not using the battery box.
When I plug in to Mic In with AGC on, Low Cut off, and Mic Gain on High I get sound. Mic power is also turned on in the R-09 menu.
However, with those same settings applied and with the mics plugged into Line In I get nothing. No sound.
Now, is this because these mics needs to be powered to work, do I have a defective unit, or am I doing something wrong.
I should also note that I hear nothing in the headphones when montioring with the mics in Line In.
Thanks.
Yes, indeed, your mics need some sort of power. Activating Plug in power results only in powering through mic-in. Line in needs expects some line level input. You could use a battery box or a pre-amp, or be just fine using the mic in, imho.
Don't know about those squids, maybe they need some specific voltage to reach full dynamics. I vaguely remember the R-09 having 3 volts as plug-in power, a battery box would power your mics a 9 volts..
NO mic power available from the LINE input.
Suggest MIC in ONLY without also having external power module for this mic.
No reason to use LINE input as R-09 MIC input is VERY resistant to overloads approaching professional line levels!

Thanks guys.
I do have the battery box for the squids. So, if I hook that up and line in it, then it should work? I am just testing all my equipment 1) to make sure everything works and 2) so I understand what I am doing.
All the hardware is new to me so I want to make sure its working correctly.
When using the batterybox you should be able to hear at least something on Line in. The mics I have give quite a low signal, and I have to crank up my signal using line-in. There should be at least *some* signal using a batterybox. Try screaming into the mics ;)
Running my AT853's > R09 is probably somewhat similar to your Squids... run it as required to get the gain you need at the time. I don't think there is one right answer.
At a normal "loud" show, I run Mics > Batt Box > Line in, with gain set frequently in the 15-20 range. There is enough drive here that I don't need any additional gain mic preamp gain, so I just run line in...
If it's a quiet, typically acoustic, type show, I would run Mic-In (low sensitivity typically). If I where to use Mic > batbox > Line in as described above, I would have to run line in at a full 30 gain, and still have low levels. The preamp exists to be used, so I use it in this case.
I have run my Nak mics (which are well known to have very low levels) into mic input on HIGH gain, because I need the gain.
I don't typically use AGC... I just don't like it... but that's preference.
