Title: Dead Rats
Post by: Josephine on May 27, 2007, 04:24:02 PM
Just how windy does it have to  get before I break them out?
Help, please.
I'm on the beach  . .  a little breezy .. . . I just want to know in case it picks up.

if it's a nice stiff breeze say it makes a stand sway than dead rats. anything faster or gusts for sure.
my disclaimer is I don't have any yet and why I don't know ... but I don't normally notice wind on the recordings with the standard foam screens unless it's a good 20 mph wind with gusts higher maybe 15mph?
A place I record at a lot in the summer usually has a good 10-15 mph breeze blowing constantly across the water.

Play it safe Val and throw the Rats on.  Wind can pick up off the ocean in a moment's notice.  I have my Rats on my mics almost everytime when I'm taping outside.

Better safe than sorry, especially when you're on the beach taping.  If there is no wind, you're going to sacrifice maybe a small amount of high-end because of the dead rat.  However a few big gusts could certainly ruin a tape relatively quickly.  I'd throw them on just to be sure.

^^^^^^
What they said.  Outside, and any breeze, and the rats go for a ride on the stand.

+t to you all.  Thanks for the advice, guys.
It was a beautiful day at Avila Beach.  Sunny, 70 degrees . . .

Some guy saw the rats and asked me if they were "official windscreens" or if they were they "made up."
I told him they were "officially made up."
Then there was the woman who looked quite puzzled/startled when I put them on and pointed them out to her boyfriend.
I told her not to worry . . . they wouldn't bite.

Will,

What kind of windscreens do you have?  If they're DPAs, I can loan you my DPA Rats on Saturday and I'll just run the Shotties for Dickey Betts.  I have Rats for the Shotties.  PM me.  I'll make you a set to fit your DPAs next week too.

I had my rats on at a show last year and someone asked if my mic stand was a stand for a parrot.

Why not just pick up some big Shures. One less thing to worry about carrying. They are big, but they squish easily and bounce back pretty fast.

If you need them just once, you will be glad you had them.  They take up no space really, and one nice gust of wind, and you will be wishing you had them.  My pair, in brown fur, on the TLM-170s looks like an aerial wookie meeting.  ;D

A81WS or Dead Rat over stock windscreen. It seems like the A81WS is big and would muffle the highs a little. Does anyone have experience?
