have decided on buying a taping rig am pretty set on the edirol R09 need help with the mics have about 200-300 dollars to spend on mics maybe more if i can sell my fender hot rod deluxe amp and about the preamp or battery box also a dumb question i looked at the edirol it only has one input for mics but have read alot about getting a pair of mics alhough matched mics seem much more expencive are they really crucial to have and how would they be run into the edirol any and all suggestions are greatly apricitated as i know that this hobby is all about trial and error but would like to put together something fairly solid fo around 600 to 800 dollars if possible P.S. what a great place for a begginer to get started will keep reading up just looking for a starting point that i won't totally regret

Intended use is an important consideration.
If you'll be open taping, then the rig recommend by Goodcooker and Kindguy is 'better' for that use. If you'll be mostly stealthing, then the smaller mics/pre is more appropriate.

Yes, for stealthing go with the Church Cards and batt box.

+T for finding your way here. The R-09 has only one mic in plug, but it is stereo, so you will end up with cables that will join the left and right, and then go into the 1/8" plug. The R-09's A/D converter is pretty good from everyone's perspective, especially in a starter rig, so you really only need to be concentrating on the mics, and battery box or mini-preamp. Chris Church's stuff is a good place to start looking. Also check the Yard Sale section for used gear for sale. Don't rush, even though you might want to, it is better to listen to some mics and pre mixes from etree or the archive, so that you can hear how they sound. Your first investment in this hobby, will likely not be your last. Once you get hooked, it is a non-stop process of moving up the ladder--piece by piece--until, someday, you have the dream rig you always wanted. I am just about there. 8)

I can vouch for the Church Audio Gear teamed up with and R-09. Makes for a nice rig both open and stealth.
Have a listen....... (oops too many periods?) >:D
BTW my entire rig, mics, preamp, r-09, stand, bag, home-made shock mount and kwon bar ran me right around $800. So it can be done!

Now, to rerail this thread, Church mics are a great option, or whatever. Tons of options available to you (oops - that's hyperbole). A number of decent options available to you in this price range.
Now how's THAT for work avoidance!!! I've added absolutely no value to the thread! ;D

Just about there? You've got 170's, a V3 and a 722. How much further do you expect you need to go?
