I need to put together some gear that will be used in recording dialog outdoors. Since it's going to be used for a video shoot, the person holding the microphone has to be able to move away from the camera. I can't use a wireless system due to the fact that this is an RF-rich environment. It also has to be compact, almost pocket size.
The plan is to use a Rode NTG-1 with a Shure FP23 connected to an iriver ihp-120.
Please note that because I am on a budget purchasing an MT24/96 or an R-09 isn't an option at this point. I already own the Shure and the iriver.
What is your opinion of this kind of set up? Can you recommend ways to improve it?

I was once cyber-thumbing through Craigs List and saw a post from a person who was looking for a taper to get audio on his band in return for some beers. I was free that night and responded to the post, taped the show, and drank the beer. The recording came out well, I was happy with the beers, and he was happy with the tape. Perhaps you can beer your way into a nice setup?
Never underestimate the power of Craig's List!

The thing is, if there is going to be beer involved anywhere down the line I'm going to have to drink it. Some would say you can't have your beer and tape it. But I do.

who says that?
freak!
imo, sell what you have and use the proceeds to buy what you *need*.
