edit: I gave up and set up a private torrent tracker with BNBT. very easy and you can make it secure, ie login and passwords.
so I use to have a server using serv U and DynDNS. then I got a router and could never get it to work through the router. said fuck it a few years ago. well now I am determined to get this to work. so I downloaded serv U and signed up on DynDNS. having nothing but trouble again.
oh yea tried DNS4Me as well.
I found this link
http://lifehacker.com/software/home-server/how-to-set-up-a-home-ftp-server-130806.php
got everything installed and opened the ports in the router.
I also found this link
http://www.rhinosoft.com/newsletter/NewsL2004-06-03.asp?prod=rs
I now have a static IP.
my main thing is I can figure out which IP to use in the server settings. I have tried the main one for my connection, ie the one it list when I go to what's my IP. I have tried both DNS1 & 2 from ipconfig or my router settings. I've tried the subnet mask, the static IP etc etc.
the only way I've got it to "work" was putting in the static IP of the laptop (servU is on it) and then I could "connect" on the laptop but not from my other computer so it isn't really working.
as far as DynDNS I have set up a domain for both static and dynamic IP. but again what IP do I enter there?? tried all of them there as well and can't get it to work.
so anyone feel like posting a "ftp server for dumnies"? getting very frustrated. I've tried pretty much every type of server in this thread
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,54964.0.html
and serv U is as close as I can get to having it work.

I don't use Serv-U; but I did have similar issues initially setting up a server. Couple questions:
- Which router?
- Did you forward a set of ports for passive mode?

I forward the ports for passive mode but again not sure what IP to forward for. the static ip of the laptop that is hosting the server or the dns etc etc. right now it's set for the static ip of the laptop.
but again I don't even know what IP to enter in the server settings or dyndns.

You'll have to set the IP to that being assigned to your server by the router. Go Start>Run, type in CMD and hit enter. At the command line, type in 'ipconfig' and type enter. You should probably get an IP like 192.168.1.101. That'll be the IP that you forward your FTP ports to.
