Does anyone have any recommendations for economical stealth mics for the R-09? I'm looking to start recording concerts at a good quality for my collection.
Cheers.

I suppose that all depends on what you classify as "economical". There's a list of tons of mics as well as mention of whether they're stealthable over at this thread: http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,35004.msg446209.html#msg446209
I use Church Audio Cardioids with a Church Audio Preamp. Chris Church posts here regularly and has a good rep, drop him a PM and he can help walk you through what's needed if you want to go with his gear =)

ditto, I'm running Church cards, and a 9100. 3 shows and counting, I'm very happy with my decision.

I use AT 943's and AT 853's with a 3 wire batt box and a SP Preamp.......Church makes nice mics and preamps.....alot of people use them around here with good results....
Peace,

besides church-audio cardioid mics you could also check out:
cardioids:
-SP-CMC-4U(AT853U)=>224$ with mod=> get them only with low-sens-mod(4.7k mod) from soundprofessionals.com or as 3-wire terminated with 2 mini-xlr into a 3 wire battery-box from the yard-sale here at taperssection !!!
-MM-HLSC-1 Sennheiser from microphonemadness.com for 250$
don´t forget to order holding-clips for your mics...IMHO the shure-premium holding clips are BEST!
omnis:
-church-audio omnis (same mic-body for cardioids and omnis.....interchangeable capsules!)
-MM-HLSO Sennheiser from microphonemadness.com for 250$=>smallest mics I´ve ever had ;) with a great sound.
-DPA 406x series ..........about 900-1000$ here in europe
here a pic of the MM-HLSC-1 cardioids(left) and MM-HLSO omnis(right):

Is that the 4.7k mod on those mics? If so, how does the batt. box > r-09 combo work?
I've had my eye on that box for my stealth rig. Haven't pulled the trigger (yet), due to the lost gain on the 4.7k mod.
-
yes my sp-cmc-4u were low-sens-modded from soundprofessionals...4.7k mod when i bought them.
will test my rig tomorrow the 1st time.
i also have an mm-preamp(+40db max) so the -12dB caused by the mod are no problem.
http://www.microphonemadness.com/products/mmsterpreamh.htm
my mm-preamp is with 1 knob only, didnt want 2 knobs for adjusting each channel separately.
and the power-switch is also different.
here is my preamp:

for loud shows a bbox is just fine, you don´t need a preamp. same with church cards.

Excellent. Lemme know how that goes. :)

Yeah, but then I have to normalize the hell out of it in post, even with my MD set to max gain. I'm hoping that an upgrade to an R-09 will help fix that. :)

I would go for the SP-PREAMP-11 ...the new one which is VERY small. Much smaller than the CA9100(largest) or my MM-PREAMP(about 1 " shorter than the CA9100).
It runs with a 12V battery which only makes about 20 hours...so for a 3 day festival u might need a 2nd 12V battery. but excellent for stealthing of course ;).
-
my rechargeables for tomorrows festival at www.donauinselfest.at: makes 15-17 hours with 3x2 batteries.

I use DPA 4022 and DPA 4061 like them both. maybe make an investment if you see yourself doing taping down the road--its well worth it
-
ditto.
IMO, big fan of the church mod AT853.
But there are so many lapel / overhead choir / small cardioid mics. Experiment!!!
take the path less traveled.

I run AT853's > battbox > R09 line in all the time. Mine don't have the Low-sensitivity mod. I typically run in the middle of the 0-30 range on the R-09. My guess is if you lose 12db via mod you should go for mic in, although you might get away with line in.
This is not an exact science. Pick up your gear, head to some friendly bar, ask the band if if's OK to tape them, and play with your gear. Only once have I had someone say no when I asked, most of the time they are flattered. It's the best way to try out new gear before you head to that special once in a lifetime show.

I run CA cards + CA 9000 preamp > R-09 which I personally think sounds great.
I usually use: level 8 on the R-09 (line in, not mic), and about 75 (roughly) on the preamp knob w/ +10 switch.
You can see the stuff by clicking the links in my sig :)

Don't you come out with really low levels? I run the exact same gear, set my preamp the same, and for Derek Trucks this weekend I had the R-09 set at level 24 and still had to give it a little boost in post.
I do record in 24 BIT, so that might make a bit of difference.......
