Title: he shoots....
Post by: Nick's Picks on June 26, 2007, 02:35:27 PM
he SCORES
pair of stratos mono blocks...$699.
eBay baby!!!!!
http://tinyurl.com/2hdxxa

shit, even if they are dead it was a good deal.
Klaus (owner, designer of Odyssey) shit his pants when I told him what I paid for these.  he recognized the amps from the pictures and said they are legit.  I"ll send them to him for a cap and wire upgrade to make them super fat.  He told me the step up to stratos monos from a straight stratos stereo amp was huge.
so now I have an Odyssey Tempest preamp (remote, w/MM&MC stages) > stratos MONOs > Martin Logan Sequal IIs.  I think my shit is about to go to the "next level" in a BIG WAY !!!!

i'm all excited.
now...how to pay for them?
;0
anyone need some ck63 caps?

Best of all you get two Raider stickers!  If you need more, I'll gladly send you some.  ^-^

I am starting to shop for another two channel amp since my Sunfire has a little 60Hz hum and I don't want to pay the $375 flat rate repair fee that Sunfire charges.  I saw these Odysseys earlier today on Audiogon, which look to be about the same as what you scored (but more "extreme"?) -
http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampstran&1187982864

They are too big for my setup.  Most monoblocks are too big for me since I already have a 5 channel amp that would be used in a 7 channel home theater.

Anyway, good score!  I may have been tempted to "make room" if I saw them  ;D

Ever try any of the Symphonic Line amps Nick?

nope.
and honestly...unless someone comes up saying "this amp will make your dick bigger"...I doubt I'd move beyond Odyssey products.  they are the best I've ever heard.  Ever.

looks like they do have an English site

http://www.symphonic-line.com/

For several years my main amp was a Symphonic Line RG1 MkII - Im out of the high end scene now - but I doubt I could go back to anything else...I could change any element - but that was constant. You could always get a better "read" of the sound of any gear attached to it...

Always liked Passive Buffered Preamps too - I think I had one by Monarchy that was excellent...

Very nice score!

Odyssey products do sound great, I just wish my Candela tube pre would get here already (order placed 12/30/06).  I've got my final call into Klaus about where this is since he was paid in full 4/21 and I've been told 3 times it will ship in "two weeks"  >:(   May cancel the order and go with Modwright  :-\

I don't think that's enough wattage, especially coming from a 300x2 Sunfire.  I like the slam!  My 5 channel amp is an Anthem MCA-5 and that's rated around 185 per channel, so I'd want something close to that amount of power.  The Anthem Statement amp is tempting, since it'll somewhat match the sonic characteristics of my 5 channel.

I'm curious about these Odyssey amps though...."best you've ever heard", eh?  What other amps have you compared?  What do you (and others in this thread) like about the Odyssey sound?   My Von Schweikert speakers were purchased in large part to your glowing reviews of them a couple years back, so I assure you that your opinion isn't falling on deaf ears :)

PS - I dig that Odyssey 20 yr warranty.  I've had a couple Sunfire subs go out on me, and two amps develop issues that I have had to pay to fix.

Other amps?
McCormack
BAT
B&K
Music Hall
Macintosh
ICEpower modules
Sony's ES line
Monarchy
Manley...
thats all I can think of at the moment.  some of these I didn't own, but knew very well from my friends systems.

what I like about these is the stability of the presentation.  hard to describe, but when you hear it you'll know what "stable" really is. Not to mention a warm, FAT presentation w/so much UMPH..., so much detail and a soundstage that engulfs you.

I saw a review or two that said "slightly warm" sounding.  How about the actual warmth of the amp while running and when idle?  My amps run in a cabinet with the rear being open.  The Sunfire never got more than warm and the Anthem just gets a little warm.  Since it appears that this amp is recommended to be left on, I'd hate wasting the electricity and heating up my room.

Been running the Odyssey Stratos Extreme SE hard and never warm (nearly cool to the touch).  The Khartago mono runs much warmer than the Stratos.
